The SMCO provides advice and guidance to healthcare providers regarding complex patient care matters, patient flow, staffing, patient relations and risk management issues, policy administration and problem-solving. This is a great opportunity for someone looking to take their clinical leadership and problem-solving skills to the next level in a complex, high-acuity environment. The SCOM is the administrative presence in the building during evening and night hours (M-F 1900-0700) and through the weekend (0700 Saturday until 0700 Monday) and statutory holidays.

MANDATORY QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s degree preferred
  • Member in good standing with their relevant Professional Regulatory Body (i.e. College of Nurses of Ontario etc.).
  • Demonstrated leadership experience (at least 3 years) in a healthcare setting
  • Basic Life Support certification required

Responsibilities:

  • The SCOM works collaboratively with the bed allocator, patient registration clerk, shift leads on the clinical units, and on-call leaders to effectively and safely utilize the available bed space to ensure that the right patient is placed in the right bed in a timely manner. When demand for resources exceeds supply, the SCOM will decide how the available resources are to be allocated to keep all areas of the organization functioning optimally and safely.
  • The SCOM is visible and accessible to staff in order to respond to requests for assistance and guidance when staff encounter complex situations requiring additional skill or expertise. The SCOM helps to build capacity in staff members through mentorship and other acts of support such as: assisting with the interpretation of policy, offering support by facilitating communication amongst staff or with patients and families, referring staff to available resources at BCHS, facilitating bed management meetings, sharing and discussing with staff the strategic priorities and ways in which they can contribute towards achieving these.
  • The SCOM directly supports patients and families when situations occur that require a higher level of administrative authority. The SCOM can assist patients and families with interpreting BCHS’s bill of patients’ rights and responsibilities. The SCOM is also responsible for receiving and documenting formal complaints brought forward by patients and families and approving and initiating any necessary action to ensure the safety of patients, families, staff, physicians and visitors.
  • The SCOM is responsible for maintaining an accurate log of situations requiring SCOM participation or intervention for each shift. The SCOM is responsible for communicating and engaging in follow-up with managers and directors as necessary for situations that require administrative intervention. This follow-up includes communication via email, telephone, or face-to-face meetings.
