POSITION OVERVIEW

Reporting to the Director of Corporate Communications and Community Engagement, the Senior Communications Specialist, Redevelopment will act as an expert advisor to hospital and healthcare leaders on strategic communications activities related to the Redevelopment project. This includes leading, contributing to and implementing strategic internal and external communications plans; stakeholder, partnerships and community relations; writing and editorial planning; and media and public relations efforts. The Senior Communications Specialist is a valued team member of the MGH Corporate Communications team. This role supports the communications team during emergent or crisis situations and requires on-call duties as assigned.
The Senior Communications Specialist will act as a key liaison between MGH and community partners and stakeholders, implementing and supporting integrated communications plans related to the Redevelopment project to help provide information on the project with both internal and external audiences. Based on workload and timing, the candidate may be asked to work on other projects and priorities that help promote partnerships and high-quality healthcare services in the East Toronto community.
The successful candidate will act as a writer for the MGH newsroom, including guiding editorial planning across platforms, providing oversight of editorial guidelines, and supporting team members with reviewing and editing content before publication. The candidate will focus on stories related to the Redevelopment project but may be asked to work on other projects and priorities.
The Senior Communications Specialist assists with mentoring, coaching and developing fellow members of the department and students.

EDUCATION

  • University degree in Public Relations, Journalism, Digital Media, Communications or related degree with a minimum of 5 years of experience in communications or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Well-versed in public relationspractices, particularly in the areas of strategic communications, media relations, stakeholder relations and issues management.

EXPERIENCE

  • Excellent written, listening and presentation skills
  • Adept at establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with community partners and external stakeholders as well as internal staff and stakeholders.
  • Skilled at providing expert communications planning advice and support to clients
  • Knowledge of social and digital media best practices and building online communities
  • Highly motivated and demonstrated success in taking initiative and problem solving
  • Proven ability towork in a fast-paced environment and effectively manage multiple competing requests with great attention to detail
  • Present ideas and communication plans clearly and articulately to key audiences
  • Maintains professionalism and represents MGH with diplomacy
  • Basic knowledge of content management systems such as WordPress or Drupal considered an asset
  • Basic knowledge of online design programs such as Canva considered an asset
  • Basic knowledge of video filming and editing considered an asset
  • Basic knowledge of photography considered an asset
