ABOUT US

The Barbican is an international arts, conference and learning organisation in the heart of the City of London.
Across its theatres, concert halls, cinemas, galleries, business venues, public and community spaces, the Barbican showcases the most exciting artists and performers from around the world, pushing traditional artistic boundaries and helping us understand our lives in new and unexpected ways. Each year, the Centre presents hundreds of different performances, events and exhibitions that entertain and inspire millions of people, create connections, provoke debate, and reflect the world we live in.
Firmly rooted in its neighbourhood, the Barbican collaborates on projects with local communities, and supports young people and emerging talent to develop their artistic practice and access jobs in the creative industry.

Responsibilities:

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are looking for an experienced and motivated individual to lead our corporate communications function, working on campaigns targeting both external and internal audiences, to support and enable our transformation agenda. You’ll work on vital topics including the renewal of our iconic building, our sustainability strategy, and our essential work on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion.
You’ll report directly to, and deputise for, the Head of Communications, and manage a team of specialists in areas including Internal Communications, Community Engagement and External Affairs. Working with your team, it will be your role to develop and deliver creative communications strategies and campaigns to engage our staff, funders, stakeholders and the wider public on how the Barbican is transforming, while also tackling some of the most important issues of the day. You’ll also provide communications support for our commercial business teams, including events, retail and hospitality.
You’ll work seamlessly with our marketing and digital teams to ensure communications strategies, campaigns and tactics are fully integrated across all channels. And you’ll build strong relationships with key stakeholders in local and national government, the cultural sector, and our own neighbourhood community.
Our ideal candidate will be confident working with media and a wide range of stakeholders. A strategic thinker, you will have demonstrable experience of objective setting and evaluation, and using results to further refine and improve campaign plans. You’ll also be a dynamic and committed team leader, and a confident and diplomatic communicator. Experience and knowledge of the arts or wider cultural sector would be a clear advantage.
To view the full Job Description and Person Specification, please see the ‘Job Information Pack’.

As part of our commitment to increasing the diversity of staff within the Barbican we are particularly keen to encourage applications from people from groups that are currently underrepresented, including people from the Global Majority* and D/deaf and disabled people. We want to better reflect and understand the communities we exist to serve. We are members of the Disability Confident Scheme and guarantee to interview all disabled candidates who would like to be considered under this scheme and who meet the minimum essential criteria for the role. Please contact us if you require reasonable adjustments as part of the application process.

  • Global Majority is a collective term that refers to people who are Black, Asian, Brown, dual-heritage, indigenous to the global south, and or, have been racialised as ‘ethnic minorities’
