Position Details:
Senior Corporate Counsel, Employment (U.S.) serves as an employment law expert for Grainger’s Legal, Human Resources, and business teams. You will provide practical employment law advice in a dynamic environment and report to the Assistant General Counsel, Labor & Employment. The work location is hybrid in Lake Forest with 3 days per week required in the Lake Forest office.

You Will:

  • Be a subject matter expert in all areas of federal and state employment laws and provide proactive, strategic, and practical counseling and legal advice on a range of employment law issues such as hiring, performance management, disciplinary action, terminations, discrimination and harassment allegations, internal investigations, contingent worker issues, reasonable accommodations, leaves of absence, wage and hour compliance, employee benefits, incentive compensation programs, and general employee risk management.
  • Partner with Human Resources and manage responses to administrative charges, demand letters, and other potential disputes through negotiation or mediation. This includes reviewing and responding to regulatory claims, including EEOC and state/local FEPA actions, and managing outside counsel on these matters and other employment issues.
  • Provide advice to Human Resources, key functional partners, and business clients on employment law compliance issues (e.g., Title VII, ADA, ADEA, FLSA, FMLA) and help develop strategic plans and practices for employment-related matters, including but not limited to, policies, procedures, litigation and pre-litigation matters.
  • Establish positive relationships and work collaboratively with others to achieve desired objectives across Grainger’s multiple businesses, and be positioned to spot trends, opportunities for better practices, and provide insights and suggested solutions with key stakeholders.

You Have:

  • Juris Doctor (JD) degree and admitted to a state bar
  • 8+ years of experience post J.D. in employment law in a corporate role and/or law firm with an emphasis on prior experience counseling business clients/in-house counsel experience and managing/defending litigation and government agency charges.
  • Experience successfully building and maintaining strong working relationships with clients and other key stakeholders; ethical with a high degree of personal integrity; highly accountable; transparent.
  • Excellent communication skills, and ability to leverage resources and influence or lead teams and work streams without direct reporting authority.
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced environment and adjust to business needs while appropriately balancing legal risk to enable strategic decisions and outcomes.
