The Water Infrastructure and Operations Branch (WIOB) of AGI plays a key role in managing the water within the province and is responsible for the safety and operations of over $11 billion of water management infrastructure. WIOB is also responsible for the Alberta Dam and Canal Safety Regulatory Program. Within WIOB, the Dam Safety Team is responsible for the implementation of the Dam and Canal Safety Framework and providing technical services for the safety management of AGI owned water management infrastructure.
QUALIFICATIONS
Required:
- Two (2) year technical diploma preferably in Civil Engineering Technology.
- Six (6) years progressively responsible related experience in civil engineering, water management infrastructure, Dam safety, Geotechnical Instrumentation, and /or Regulatory Assurance.
- Valid Class 5 Driver’s License.
- Must be eligible for membership with the Association of Science and Engineering Technology Professionals of Alberta. (ASET).
- Preference will be given to candidates with a diploma in Civil Engineering Technology.
Equivalencies: Equivalencies may be considered - directly related education or experience on the basis of:
- 1 year of education for 1 year of experience; or
- 1 year of experience for 1 year of education
Responsibilities:
As a member of the Dam Safety Team, the Sr. Dam Safety Technologist contributes to the delivery and stewardship of the Dam and Canal Safety Regulatory Program through effective implementation of the Dam and Canal Safety Regulatory Framework. The position also provides technical support to implement the Alberta Agriculture and Irrigation (AGI’s), Dam Safety Management Program for department owned water management infrastructure.
Reporting to the Senior Dam Safety Engineer, the position is responsible for:
- Ensuring the quality and timeliness of the dam safety information being stored in the Environmental Infrastructure Management System (EIMS) and provided to Department executives, the regulated community, and the public.
- Building collaborative relationships and approaches with the regulated community, qualified professionals, and others to achieve compliance goals.
- Supporting consistent, coordinated, and effective delivery of the Alberta Dam and Canal Safety Regulatory Program:
- Performing annual audit inspections of dam and canal infrastructure throughout the province.
- Reviewing and updating processes and procedures to meet goals.
- Maintaining a strong working knowledge of the Dam and Canal Safety Framework and industry best practices/technologies; and
- Preparing written correspondence and technical reports.
- Supporting continuous improvement of the Alberta Dam and Canal Safety Regulatory Program.
- Supporting the implementation and continuous improvement of AGI’s Dam Safety Management Program by:
- implementing, promoting, and enhancing the Branch Occupational Health and Safety Program;.
- providing technical support for Branch dam and canal emergency management;.
- contributing to Branch dam safety management committee activities; and
- collecting geotechnical instrumentation readings as required.
