POSITION OVERVIEW:

As a Senior Data Engineer at the Globe and Mail, you will drive the transformation and optimization of our data ecosystem to enhance innovation and strategic decision-making. You will be a key player in architecting scalable and efficient data pipelines that support critical business functions, including editorial, subscription management, and advertising.
Working closely with our data science and analytics teams, you will integrate advanced analytics and machine learning models into our infrastructure, unlocking actionable insights from our governed data. Your role will ensure that our systems not only address current operational needs but also align with our long-term business objectives, enhancing predictive capabilities and securing a competitive edge in the digital publishing landscape.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Data Architecture: Proven expertise in designing and implementing scalable data architectures, with a strong focus on data lakes and data warehouses, particularly using Snowflake and Redshift.
  • ETL and Data Pipelines: Proven experience in building and optimizing ETL pipelines using tools like Airflow, NiFi, or custom Python scripts. Ensure data workflows are reliable, scalable, and performant.
  • Cloud Platforms: Hands-on experience with cloud services such as AWS (S3, EC2, EMR), Azure (Blob Storage, Databricks), or Google Cloud (BigQuery, Dataflow). Utilize cloud-native services for data storage, processing, and analytics.
  • Data Governance: Deep knowledge of data governance frameworks and best practices. Experience in implementing data security, privacy, and regulatory compliance measures (e.g., Quebec Bill 64) using DataOps principles.
  • Programming and Optimization: Advanced proficiency in Python for scripting and data analysis, SQL for querying and optimization, and optionally Scala or Java for big data processing frameworks like Spark.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Strong interpersonal and communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including data scientists, analysts, and business stakeholders. Ability to translate complex technical concepts into clear business insights and requirements.

VACCINATION POLICY:

All offers of employment with The Globe and Mail are conditional upon the candidate being Fully Vaccinated. To be Fully Vaccinated is defined as someone who has received the full series of a vaccine or a combination of vaccines accepted by the Government of Canada (currently Pfizer, Moderna, AstraZeneca, Janssen) and has received the last dose at least 14 days prior to their start date. To prove they are Fully Vaccinated, all new hires will be required to provide evidence by emailing a copy of their vaccine dose administration receipt(s) to Human Resources prior to their start date. Those seeking exemption based on one or more of the protected grounds in the Human Rights Code will need to provide their request for accommodation to Human Resources for approval. If the accommodation request is not approved and the candidate is not Fully Vaccinated, any offer of employment will be revoked.

Responsibilities:

  • Data Infrastructure Mastery: Leverage Snowflake, AWS, and Databricks to design and implement robust data pipelines that seamlessly integrate across diverse environments.
  • Problem-Solving Excellence: Collaborate with data scientists, ML engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders to devise elegant solutions for complex data challenges.
  • Data Stewardship: Implement encryption, access controls, and compliance measures to safeguard data. Contribute to defining the organization’s Data Governance framework and champion data democracy and literacy.
  • Performance Optimization: Fine-tune queries, indexing, and ETL processes to transform raw data into actionable insights with maximum efficiency.
  • AI Enablement: Manage, prepare and structure data to support ingestion by machine learning models, enabling our AI initiatives.
  • Data Champion: Promote a culture of continuous improvement, automation, and efficiency across data teams. Mentor team members and drive knowledge sharing throughout the organization.
