Description:

LOCATION: HYBRID - LONDON OFFICE (2 DAYS A WEEK)

Millions of people visit the Rightmove website every day, to view more property listings than any other portal in the UK. We have a huge amount of data describing how people use our site, and what this means to our customers. Rightmove also has significant existing data infrastructure, across Google Cloud, on-premises and in SaaS environments.
This role will play a key part in the delivery of data use cases as well as the foundational build of our self-serve data platform. This role sits in a data engineering team within the Data and Analytics function comprising analysts, analytics engineers, data engineers, database architects, data scientists and ML Engineers. The team sits within the Product Development department, which plays a pivotal role in delivering the overall consumer and customer digital experience underpinning the Rightmove business.
We recognise that to deliver the best products and features, we need to work effectively as a healthy, high performing team. We are looking for someone who is comfortable working collaboratively across a mix of cross-functional and centralised teams, to achieve Rightmove’s data and cloud strategy.

Responsibilities:

WHAT YOU’LL BE DOING

  • You will work on complex data challenges, balancing delivery of short-term wins and longer-term value from data.
  • You will collaborate with our data product owner and stakeholders to collect and refine data requirements.
  • You will help design and develop data pipelines, orchestrating key activities such as data ingestion, data transformation, task automation and serving of data to applications and dashboards.
  • You will collaborate with data analysts, analytics engineers, data scientists and ML engineers to enable their data use cases.
  • You will help evolve our self-serve data platform to implement the technical component of our data strategy.
  • You will optimise data storage, infrastructure performance and cost within our data platform.
  • You will practice and promote excellent data and cloud engineering best practices.
  • You will work in a high-performing agile team, creating and refining tickets, and participating in sprint planning and refinement sessions and team retrospectives.

WHAT YOU’LL BRING TO THE ROLE

  • Experience building data solutions in the cloud (GCP, AWS or Azure). Infrastructure as Code, such as Terraform, is a bonus.
  • Experience writing SQL queries and Python code to manipulate data for analytics and data science.
  • Knowledge of data storage and data modelling concepts.
  • Experience with trunk-based development and best-practices using Git for version control.
  • An understanding of how to work in different development environments e.g. dev, qa and prod.
  • An ability and eagerness to write high-quality technical documentation and READMEs alongside your code and architecture diagrams.
  • An understanding of the challenges of working with data, and strategies to address them e.g. data quality, privacy, security.
  • A pragmatic approach to data engineering, balancing the need to deliver near-term value with future-proofing and scalability.
  • Basic knowledge of GDPR and data security best practices, as well as frameworks for testing, monitoring and alerting in relation to data pipelines.
