Description:

At Thales, we know technology has the ability to make our world more secure, sustainable, and inclusive – and that it’s all driven by human intelligence.
Because it takes human intelligence to build and power the systems and solutions that people depend on every day. So we stay curious and make space for diverse points of view. We share what we know and we challenge what’s possible.
From manufacturing and engineering to cybersecurity and space, we’re driving progress in some of the world’s most important industries – and working together to build a future we can all trust.
The Senior Design Engineer will be involved in the end-to-end design process within an R&D-driven environment, supporting a team dedicated to designing, producing, testing, and managing large rocket motors for the High-Speed Weapons Program.
Collaborating closely with our valued customers, partners, and subcontractors, you will take charge of managing tasks, work packages, and products to ensure seamless project execution and delivery.

Based either at our Melbourne Office in the World Trade Centre or our Mitcham office on Wurundjeri land, and reporting directly to the Engineering Manager - High-Speed Weapons, your role will encompass:

  • Developing and advance design activities using Creo for solid rocket motors and associated equipment, ensuring alignment with project requirements and specifications
  • Performing engineering analyses to validate and support the design activities of the group, including structural, thermal, and fluid dynamics analyses
  • Creating manufacturing and prototyping plans, collaborating closely with production and engineering teams to ensure feasibility and efficiency in the manufacturing process
  • Leading R&D initiatives aimed at enhancing internal capabilities in propulsion technology, staying at the forefront of industry advancements and innovation
  • Performing and overseeing test programs to validate design performance and functionality, coordinating with testing facilities and teams to ensure accurate and reliable results
  • Preparing comprehensive design and test reports documenting methodologies, results, and recommendations, facilitating clear communication and decision-making within the organization.

On day one in this role, we’ll expect you to bring the following skills, experience and behaviours:

  • Product development experience, ideally related to composite materials
  • End-to-end design/engineering experience in high-performance or high-temperature mechanical systems, propulsion, or aerospace-related products
  • Knowledge of and experience with propulsion systems, rockets, energetics, or guided weapon systems is advantageous but not essential
  • Simulation experience, preferably with Ansys
  • Experience in engaging with and managing suppliers and manufacturing staff
  • Willingness to conduct hands-on prototyping and development activities
  • Ability to meet the requirements for professional membership of Engineers Australia
  • Flexibility to travel
