What you’ll be doing
As a Design Manager you will support site-based buildings project teams and early stages of building projects. This includes managing and controlling the design process to ensure the design and procurement of specialist packages meet project requirements and align with cost parameters. Additionally, support Work Winning/Project Delivery teams by providing design input and cost-effective solutions.

As a Design / Senior Design Manager, you will have the following accountabilities:

  • Manage the development and implementation of design proposals to meet customer requirements, including budget constraints. Present proposals for customer approval.
  • Ensure designs deliver safety in construction and use, quality within affordable parameters, ease of maintenance, energy efficiency, minimal environmental impact, and innovation.
  • Manage effective briefing of the Design Team, including third parties or novated design teams, ensuring they meet customer specifications and assessing their competence and resources.
  • Provide buildability advice to design and construction teams on all packages.
  • Liaise with statutory bodies/authorities as required (planning, building control, services such as gas and water).
  • Support the Safety by Design & Engineering forum or similar forums.
  • Lead the development and management of the design deliverables programme.
  • Ensure a clear schedule of design deliverables.
  • Lead gate review activities to ensure timely and appropriate sign-off, including communication to Bid Managers and Design/Work Winning team members.
  • Coordinate and produce design data, bid deliverables, reports, and documentation essential to project and contractual requirements.
  • Lead the implementation of BIM CSUK protocols, managing and sharing data related to BIM models.
  • Liaise with BIM management during bid and construction stages to ensure the supply chain is aware of BIM requirements.
  • Apply Lean construction techniques for cost efficiency reduce waste, and optimize construction.
  • Capture and share learning and best practices across the business stream and CSUK.
  • Contribute proactively to the Risk and Value Management process.
  • Uphold Balfour Beatty Values.
  • Ensure a relentless focus on Zero Harm.
  • Support the delivery of CSUK’s sustainability activities.

Who we’re looking for

Responsibilities:

THE FOLLOWING TRAITS ARE ESSENTIAL TO BE SUCCESSFUL IN THIS ROLE

  • Proven experience in delivering design services within a site-based and work-winning environment, with successful implementation of design strategies.
  • Leadership skills in a matrix organization to deliver design services timely, focusing on customer and business sector specifics.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills to form effective relationships under time pressure.
  • Knowledge of what constitutes ‘good’ in bid submissions and work-winning, with hands-on experience in delivering timely work-winning bids.
  • Understanding and experience of site-based activities and the role of design management in effective project delivery.
  • Good working knowledge of BIM and current forms of procurement.
  • Relevant professional membership with an appropriate institute and a valid CSCS card.
  • Excellent IT skills relevant to the business stream, with essential proficiency in Microsoft Office. Detailed knowledge of applicable codes of practice and regulatory material.
  • A continuous pursuit of innovation and development with a customer and business stream focus.
  • Numeracy and bid/report writing skills.
