Description:
Responsible for the oversight of management, operations and strategic planning of Carilion Clinic’s research administration, including the Office of Research and Development (R&D), the Clinical Trials Office (CTO) and the Basic Science Research Lab (BSRL). Builds and maintains effective and collaborative relationships with management, support staff, faculty and physicians of Carilion Clinic, Virginia Tech (VT) and Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine (VTCSOM). Focuses on partnering with leadership at the Virginia Tech Carilion Research Institute (VTCRI) and to support the development of translational research between Carilion Clinic and VTCRI. Assumes additional responsibilities as directed by the Vice President of Academic Affairs.
Performs specific job responsibilities:
- Leadership. Responsible for the leadership and development of a comprehensive research program to support Carilion’s mission and strategic initiatives. Responsible for fostering a collaborative research environment, both within Carilion Clinic and with Carilion’s partner institutions. The Senior Director provides information and analytic support to Carilion’s administrative decision makers in order to facilitate strategic planning, policy-making, resource allocations, budget planning and other processes requiring sound strategic analysis.
- Building Relationships. Works closely with individuals at all levels of Carilion Clinic, VT, VTCSOM and VTCRI to identify synergies and effective use of combined resources. Ensures that duplication of work and resources is minimized. Represents Carilion research administration in business interactions. Focuses on ensuring that collaborative relationships are built and maintained with partner institutions; emphasizes relationships with VTCRI in order to help the growth of translational research between the two organizations.
- Oversight of Clinical Trials. Uses knowledge of developing policies, procedures and guidelines for research, clinical trials and lab usage to instruct others in appropriate creation and administration. Relies on prior experience with all aspects of clinical trial completion (e.g. budgeting, contract negotiation, administration, etc) to ensure staff is appropriately trained to oversee effective clinical trials through R&D.
- Formal and Informal Leadership. Manages R&D, CTO & BSRL staff, including responsibility of performance management and professional development. Sets measurable goals that effectively lead to positive outcomes. Maintains an informal or matrix management relationship with clinical research staff outside central research administration; remains knowledgeable of current research, actions and issues throughout the organization. Works collaboratively with all individuals in the research realm to ensure cooperative, efficient and effective interactions and outcomes. Manages both administrative and research budgets.
- Serves as Chair of the Biosafety Committee.
- Quality, Accountability and Improvement. Maintains a comprehensive understanding of all applicable laws, regulations and compliance issues related to research and research administration. Oversees development of standard operating procedures and policies necessary for effective and successful research development at Carilion.
- Communication and Education. Promotes research within Carilion and encourages physicians to pursue research using the resources available to them. Maintains open, positive and proactive channels of communication regarding current research and upcoming opportunities.
