DESCRIPTION
The Tax Law Center at the NYU School of Law is seeking one or more full-time (Senior) Economist/Policy Advisor to work closely with the Executive Director to contribute to rigorous, high-impact tax legal work in the public interest.
The Tax Law Center is staffed primarily with 11 tax legal attorneys who bring rigorous legal expertise to inform high-stakes decisions across tax legislation, regulation, and litigation. This opening is for the sole specialist policy or economic analyst on staff, who will play a key role in helping to ensure that the Center’s tax legal work is shaped and supported by sound analysis and understanding of the relevant economic and policy context.
You are a tax economist or tax policy expert with experience working on shaping, interpreting, or administering, US federal tax law or policy. You are excited to work closely with academics, legal practitioners, and policymakers to advance racial and economic equity in taxation. You are an excellent writer of rigorous technical tax materials, such as reports, memos, briefs, comments, or legislation and regulations. You are a highly-organized project manager and a clear communicator, able to manage production of high-quality, timely written work, and exercise judgement about where to focus time and resources to have robust input in fast-moving tax law and policy processes.
Responsibilities
The (Senior) Economist/Policy Advisor, who will report to the Executive Director or another senior member of staff, will be responsible for duties including:
- In consultation and collaboration with other senior staff, providing analysis and research to help shape and inform work such as comments on proposed administrative action, legal briefs, legislative language, and policy memos.
- Analyzing the implications of high-stakes tax law decisions in the legislative, regulatory, and litigation spaces.
- Building strong, confidential relationships with high-level practitioners, academics, and other outside experts
- Helping to design and implement systems to identify and prioritize opportunities for the Center to further its mission
For the Senior Economist/Policy Advisor role:
- Providing strategic guidance to the Executive Director and other senior team members, informed by experience or existing networks or relationships
- Supervising and mentoring Tax Law Center staff
QUALIFICATIONS
Requirements
- BA, BS, or equivalent and some US experience in federal tax policy making or administration
- Strong legal research and writing skills, including the ability to express precise, highly technical information in a way that is clear and compelling
- Excellent communication skills
- A commitment to the mission of the Center
Prior experience managing staff is a plus but is not required, but you need to be excited to develop these skills.
Your salary will fall between $110,000 and 150,000 per year for the Economist/Policy Advisor role, or $150,000 and $190,000 per year for the Senior Economist/Policy Advisor role, depending on experience.
