The Opportunity
The Facilities Reliability & Integrity Engineering Services (FRIES) organization is a team of experts who leverage deep technical skills and subject matter expertise to maximize the value of TC Energy’s facilities assets across North America. The FRIES organization is accountable for fit for purpose technical standards and asset management strategies that balance risk, asset performance and cost. FRIES also provides escalated subject matter expert (SME) support to resolve complex engineering challenges and support operations and project engineering functions.
The Balance of Plant (BOP) team within FRIES is seeking a Senior Electrical Engineer with deep industry knowledge and technical experience in electrical systems and equipment for midstream gas facilities.
What you’ll do
- Act as TC Energy’s Technical Authority and subject matter expert (SME) for Balance of Plant (BOP) electrical systems and equipment on compressor station and meter station facility assets.
- Electrical systems for which BOP is accountable include: High and medium voltage systems – including 230KV and 4.16KV systems, switchgear, MCC and breakers, generators, APU and PPU systems, UPS systems and batteries, substations, LV and MV VFDs and transformers, electric motor drives (EMDs), and protection and control relays (for motor protection and transformers)
- Act as the document contact and technical expert for applicable engineering standards including maintaining and improving requirements based on performance, feedback and learning, and respond to variance requests.
- Maintain understanding of and advise on legal requirements, external codes and standards, and act as TC Energy’s representative on targeted technical code committees and industry associations.
- Provide technical pre-qualification reviews of service providers and vendors to meet BOP standards.
- Provide Tier 3 level SME support to Operations Engineering including specialized support for escalated and complex engineering issues, incidents and investigations, and cross system issues and trends.
- Support General Plant Maintenance Capital (GPMC) program development in collaboration with Operations Engineering including SME advisement on asset strategies, risk assessments, alternatives, and optimization.
- Be a conduit for information sharing by communicating best practices, improvement opportunities, new technologies and general information to others in the organization.
- Deliver asset management and maintenance strategies for BOP systems to focus maintenance investment and establish longer range programs to balance reliability performance, cost and risk.
- Initiate and lead research and development projects to improve equipment design, engineering standards and/or methods.
- Maintain strategic supplier and vendor relationships for asset management strategies, industry understanding, engagement in issues and innovation.
- Support project engineering in engineering design and oversight through critical review activities and strategic SME input including participation in design reviews. This may include supporting projects in implementation on escalated issues, engineering standards variance demands, and engineering assessments and studies.
Minimum Qualifications
- University degree in Electrical Engineering and professional engineer (P. Eng.) designation in good standing with APEGA or equivalent governing body.
- Experience with high, medium, and low voltage electrical engineering, protection and control, hazardous area classification, UPS systems, control panel design, equipment acceptance testing, onsite commissioning
- Minimum of 20 years of progressive relevant experience.
- In depth of knowledge of applicable industry Codes and Standards related to electrical engineering: Canadian Electrical Code and industry standards (IEEE, NFPA), and best practices.
- Technical experience in asset management, risk management, reliability optimization and condition based maintenance.
- Experience in the development and management of engineering standards, specifications and procedures.
- Technical experience in engineering design, design oversight and assurance.
- Exceptional interpersonal, communication and influencing skills to be able to partner and work with company stakeholders across North America with different backgrounds and priorities.
- Pragmatic with strong decision-making skills and engineering judgment.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in high voltage systems would be considered an asset.
- Experience in conducting arc flash studies and power models leveraging applicable software applications considered an asset.
- Experience with research and development, innovation and equipment technology development.
- Experience with modern condition monitoring and predictive analytical methods and their applicability to BOP equipment.
- Demonstrated ability to pick-up and resolve new and emerging engineering problems that have ambiguity including strong personal accountability and self-development.
- Demonstrated ability to clearly and effectively communicate complex issues to different levels of leadership.
- Strong negotiation and conflict management skills.
