SP Energy Networks (SPEN) plays a vital role in ensuring we keep up with the evolving way our customers and communities generate, consume, and interact with energy through the provision of systems that are crucial to the delivery of the Government’s ambitious Net Zero and Low Carbon targets.
This is an exciting opportunity for you to join our journey as a Senior Engineer (Protection & Control) for SPD Licence Programmes. This position is an integral part of the overall delivery of major asset replacement projects and modernisation programmes.
The post-holder will work closely with the Project Managers and 11/33kV Field Operations team to ensure project progression through construction to the testing and commissioning of assets. This includes reviewing and delivering protection and control tests, commissioning for distribution networks (up to 33kV), providing commissioning programmes, test specifications, specialist technical support, advice and input throughout the portfolio.
In addition to supporting large capital programmes, you will be responsible for managing day-to-day fault and defect tasks in a timeous manner. As a Senior Engineer, you will continuously strive to gain knowledge and experience in all areas of business procedures and system operation and provide professional encouragement, support and guidance to technicians and project engineers within the section.

What you’ll be doing

  • Ensure major projects are tested and commissioned in accordance with the project schedule to the required business standards and specifications.
  • Provide expert advice and input into the preparation, commissioning, energising and delivery phases of major projects.
  • Support the safety culture of zero injuries, ensuring full compliance with all legislation and company rules, policies and procedures.
  • Focus on customer service proactively against a suitable set of measures/indicators.
  • Support business and organisational change and ensure performance, productivity and service standards are maintained / improved.
  • Influence and advise the Lead Engineer (Protection & Control) on appropriate asset maintenance and replacement strategies through identification of failing assets.
  • Deliver consistent approach in project delivery, fault management and maintenance.
  • Comply with Regulatory requirements to ensure key objectives are delivered.
  • Manage contractor interfaces to deliver value in an efficient, cost-effective manner.
  • Identify solutions to problems and the areas where performance is not on target.
  • Develop skills in business procedures to maximise output and efficiencies.
  • Participate in training/development activities and review effectiveness.
  • Proactively manage the control of costs.
  • Provide coaching, mentoring and guidance to assist with the professional and technical development of protection engineers & enhanced fitters within the section.
  • Requirement to participate on appropriate standby rota.

What you’ll bring

  • Experience and knowledge of high voltage operational and safety requirements
  • Working knowledge of Energy Networks policies, procedures and working practices
  • Awareness of commercial, environmental, and legal requirements associated with the delivery of major projects.
  • Ability to devise solutions to complex problems/challenges.
  • Requirement to work flexibly to meet the needs and location of projects.
  • Experience in a protection related environment.
  • Broad operational experience preferred, spanning Distribution Operations, Protection and SCADA and Telecoms systems.

To be successful, as a minimum you will have:

  • Engineering qualification: Degree plus 3 years experience in relevant technical discipline OR HND/HNC plus 2 years significant relevant experience.
  • Demonstratable experience in the specification, development and completion or commissioning solutions for major electrical distribution system projects
  • Extensive knowledge of Electricity Network Operations and S1/OP-1 Authorised at 11kV & 33kV or working towards.
  • Valid and Full UK Driving Licence, due to the nature of this position you will be required to work flexibly and travel to various locations.
