WHAT YOU’LL NEED

Joining SONI as a Senior Engineer, you’ll need:

Essential:

  • An engineering degree or equivalent with a minimum of 4 years’ experience.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and a proven ability to work effectively as part of a team while also being able to define and guide her/his own work under minimal supervision.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with customers and with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Strong work ethic, excellent organisation skills and attention to detail.
  • Experience of working in power system operations or similar area.
  • Strong analytical skill and ability to communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience.

Desirable:

  • Experience in performing power system analysis and proficient in the use power flow analysis tools.
  • Understanding of the industry, environment and context.
  • Experience working with standard MS Office tools.

Responsibilities:

THE ROLE

System Operations is responsible for ensuring that the operation of the power system is carried out in a safe, secure and economic manner.
The System Operations team requires a senior engineer to undertake a variety of roles related to the facilitation of maintenance and network development on the power system in an efficient manner whilst maintaining system security. There will also be a requirement to support emergency preparedness and training activities for CHCC. The purpose of this role is to support the goals of the System Operations team, by working in close cooperation with both control centres in Ireland and Northern Ireland.

Key Responsibilities

  • Work with colleagues, customers and stakeholders to support the operation of the power system from a year out up to real time.
  • Support the development of emergency plans as they relate to the power system, critical control room IT applications and other relevant aspects within the System Operations function.
  • Support annual emergency exercises and test plans.
  • Support complex projects, both technical and commercial, which are designed to achieve regulated targets and meet stakeholder needs in line with company requirements.
  • Support and provide input to audits and compliance management of operational activities including awareness and resolution of issues and implementation of change from audit findings.
  • Monitoring and reporting on the performance of the transmission system.
  • Liaise closely with key stakeholders including NIE Networks, generators, the regulatory authorities, government department and other areas within SONI and EirGrid.
  • Perform high volume of work, all to a high standard with a focus on accuracy and on-time delivery.
  • Anticipate and escalate problems as necessary.
  • Produce discrete deliverables from time to time such as analysis reports, control centre guidance notes, briefing notes.
