General Information:
Majestic mountains, the rugged West Coast Trail, serene lakes, and one of the world’s tallest free-standing timber rail trestles all lie in the picturesque Cowichan Valley Regional District (CVRD). Located on Vancouver Island, the CVRD provides a wide range of local government services to a population of 80,000 within its 4 distinct municipalities and 9 electoral areas. Just 50 km north of Victoria and 30 km south of Nanaimo, the Cowichan Valley offers a warm climate and numerous parks, recreational, cultural, and social opportunities.
The Cowichan Valley Regional District is now accepting applications for the regular full-time Senior Environmental Analyst – Watershed Science position in the Environmental Services Division within the Strategic Services Department.
Reporting to the Manager, Environmental Services Division, the Senior Environmental Analyst - Watershed Science contributes to the effective operation of the Division by assisting with a wide variety of administrative, operational and research project tasks associated with the Drinking Water and Watershed Protection program (DWWP). Work includes researching, analyzing, and preparing technical reports, environmental field studies, assisting with coordinating and facilitating various public and/or stakeholder processes, preparing grant applications, communications program development, and assisting with the overall development, preparation, implementation, project management and staff management of the DWWP program.

Qualifications:

  • Graduation from a recognized university with a degree in watershed management, environmental management, environmental planning, ecology, restoration of natural systems, or a related field.
  • A minimum eight (8) years of progressive experience related to watershed management, including supervisory experience.
  • Experience working in or with local governments is preferred.
  • Experience working with business, community, special interest and multi stakeholder groups under a community based social marketing or community-based science program is considered an asset.
  • Member of the Association of Professional Biologists or Professional Forester or other related professional association is an asset.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License
  • Occupational First Aid Level 1 with CPR or equivalent
  • An equivalent combination of education, training and experience may be considered.

Hours of Work:
Guaranteed 35 hours of work per week, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and eligible for flex time. This position is required to perform outdoor fieldwork, and may be required to attend some evening and weekend meetings.
Where operationally appropriate and subject to change, the CVRD has a Work From Home program. This program allows staff to work remotely, with the number of remote days per week determined by operational requirements, from locations that are a daily commutable distance from their work at a CVRD worksite. This position works from the CVRD’s main office in Duncan, BC, and at this time, is eligible to be part of the Work From Home program, potentially working a hybrid in-office / remote schedule after a successful in-office training period.
Salary:
Wage rate in 3 steps as per the Collective Agreement between the CVRD and CUPE Local 358, $51.35 - $52.89 - $54.44 per hour (2024 rates). Benefits are included as per the CUPE Collective Agreement.
