Description:

University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust is delighted to offer a fantastic opportunity to work with us.
Please see below for detailed job description of the role.
This role is offered until August 2025. Our department is the only tertiary centre in the region covering acute and elective services with a catchment area of 3 million across south and southwest of England. You will be covering the neurosurgery services as well as neurosciences wards. You will be exposed to all aspects of neurosurgery.
You will also be expected to perform the on-call duties in the neurosciences department. The rota is well-supported with experienced nurse practitioners as well as junior doctors. There will be ample educational opportunities including theatre attendance, weekly teaching, monthly morbidity and mortality meetings as well as clinics and MDTs and the candidates will get broad experience in functional neurosurgery.
As one of the largest acute teaching Trusts in England, we offer learning and development opportunities to help you achieve the career you aspire to. UHS is rated ‘Good’ by the CQC and in the latest national NHS Staff Survey, we were in the top 10 acute trusts for staff engagement and for staff recommending the hospital as a place to work or receive care.
We support flexible working and will consider requests taking into account the needs of the service. UHS employees are able to access a range of NHS discounts, are entitled to a minimum of 35 days paid holiday (pro rata), and we offer a generous pension scheme.
Southampton is an attractive place to live and work situated on the south coast, with an international airport and direct trains to London. The New Forest National Park and beaches of the Jurassic coast are also right on our doorstep. The city offers living costs 20% lower than London and 14 schools rated outstanding by Ofsted.
The post is offered as full-time with no on call under the co-supervision of Mr Girish Vajramani. You will gain experience in all aspects of surgery for primary and secondary intrinsic tumours, including day-case surgery, high-volumes of awake neurosurgery, insular gliomas, intraventricular tumours and meningiomas. Additionally, there will be opportunities to be involved in combined procedures with plastic surgery involving extensive reconstruction following tumour resection, using transposition and microvascular flaps. During this year you will be often working at consultant level, managing an oncology waiting list, running lists and clinics independently as well as under supervision. This will help a transition from trainee to fully independent consultant practice.
Study leave will be granted to allow attendance at courses pertinent to neuro-oncology and local courses are available for enhancing leadership, teaching and interview skills in preparation for consultant appointment. Audit and research activities in the department will be encouraged.
