Neurocritical Care Fellowship at Southmead Hospital, Bristol
Location: Southmead Hospital, Bristol, UK Duration: 6-24 months Educational Budget: up to £5000 per annum (12 month rotation +)
Southmead Hospital, Bristol, a leading neurosciences centre in the UK, is delighted to offer an exciting Neurocritical Care Fellowship designed for those who are passionate about advancing their skills in the dynamic field of neurocritical care.

As a Neurocritical Care Fellow at Southmead Hospital, you will be fully integrated into our highly skilled team, gaining hands-on experience in managing critically ill patients with neurological disorders. Our state-of-the-art Neuro Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is equipped with advanced monitoring and therapeutic modalities, providing a cutting-edge environment for learning and clinical excellence.

  • High-Volume Centre: Work in one of the busiest units in the UK, renowned for its excellence in neurocritical care, neurology, neurosurgery, neurotrauma and interventional neuroradiology. Southmead Hospital has a 24 hour a day 7 day a week acute stroke thrombectomy service and is one of the busiest centres in Europe. It delivers some of the highest neurotrauma survival rates in the UK

  • Simulation-Based Training: Participate in regular simulation training sessions to enhance your decision-making, procedural skills, and multidisciplinary team communication.

Applicants must have full registration with the GMC. This fellowship is ideal for candidates who are within the final year of training or who are post-CCT. We would consider candidates Applicants should possess a strong foundation in critical care medicine, including FFICM qualification or equivalent and a keen interest in the care of patients with acute neurological and neurosurgical disorders.

Southmead ICU is a 48-bed unit. We accept over 2500 admissions per year, of which 77% are emergency admissions. We are the regional adult Major Trauma Centre, and the regional centre for neurosurgery (with some superregional subspecialties), vascular surgery, urology, renal medicine and transplant surgery, plastic and reconstructive surgery. We are a burns unit and the trust also provides a 24 hour interventional radiology service including the supra-regional stroke thrombectomy service. We run have an active post-ICU follow-up clinic
The ICNARC standardised mortality ratio (SMR) for Southmead ICU is consistently less than 1 and the hospital has been the top performing Major Trauma Centre in the country for the past 10 quarters in terms of unexpected survivors per 100 major trauma patients.
The post has previously been approved for Special Skills Year in Neurocritical Care. The department has also previously hosted Special Skills Year Trainees in Quality Improvement and Transfer Medicine, in association with the Retrieve Service.
North Bristol NHS Trust is the largest Trust in the South West region and one of the largest trusts in the country. Last year treating over 100,000 inpatients, over 35,000 outpatients, 90,000 ED patients and helped deliver over 6,000 babies. Employing more than 9,500 staff, with approximately 1,050 inpatient beds and income in excess of £540 million (2015-2016).
The Trust provides Medical, Surgical, Neonatal, Maternity Care for its local population.. It also provides sub regional, regional and supra regional services in Neurosciences, Orthopaedics, Pathology, Plastic Surgery and Burns, Renal Medicine and Transplant and Urology and is the Major Trauma Centre for the West Country.
The local health service is being remodelled to concentrate on acute facilities and where appropriate to provide more care close to patient homes through a network community hospitals and facilities. The Trust currently delivers these services from a new hospital on the Southmead site that open in May 2014. At Southmead Hospital, we also have our excellent maternity and women’s health services, the Bristol Breast Care Centre and the Trust’s Severn Pathology Service.
The Trust has Cossham Hospital in Kingswood that recently underwent a £19m refurbishment and the Bristol Centre for Enablement at Cribbs Causeway.
The Trust has University Teaching status and is associated with both the University of Bristol and the University of the West of England.
This is an exciting opportunity for motivated individuals to further develop their CV and join a team of dynamic clinicians delivering care in state-of-the-art facilities. The posts will commence in August 2024 for a period of 1 year and include funding for a day a week protected time for professional development. There is a service commitment to a 1 in 5/1-in-6 on call rota working in a senior clinical and leadership role
