JOB SUMMARY:

As a key member of the Strategy team, the Senior Financial Analyst plays a critical role in financial planning, analysis, and decision support for AFMC. Reporting to the Controller, the incumbent is responsible for conducting financial modelling, forecasting, and budgeting to support strategic initiatives and business operations.

Responsibilities:

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develop and maintain financial models to support strategic planning, budgeting, and forecasting processes;
  • Lead month and quarter end processing ensuring all banks are reconciled, schedules are completed, accruals are all accounted for based on outstanding commitments;
  • Coordinate the preparation and release of monthly financial statements to departments and the preparation of the quarterly Board reporting and variance analysis;
  • Act as a business partner to an assigned group of departments; raising the financial acumen of departments including statement interpretation, variance analysis and budget and forecasting activities;
  • Take a leading role in the AFMC budgeting and reforecasting periods helping set up templates, conduct training sessions, prepare reference documents for department to use;
  • Maintain the accounting software locking periods on a monthly basis and reviewing the Chart of Accounts annually or periodically based on our needs and making suggestion for required changes. Conduct ad-hoc financial analysis and special projects to support business initiatives, investment opportunities, and cost optimization effort;
  • Prepare and file the Semi-Annual GST/HST & QST Rebate;
  • Validate outputs from other finance team members and provide correction as necessary;
  • Assist with the preparation of year-end closing procedures, working papers, account analysis and audit activities; Stay informed about changes in accounting standards, regulations, and industry trends, ensuring compliance and best practices;
  • Support the annual financial audit process by providing documentation, explanations, and analysis as required.
  • Prepare cost projections, that will help in budgeting and resource allocation;
  • Participate in inter-departmental meetings, working groups/committees and projects as required;
  • Participate in creating and implementing financial and corporate policies and procedures;
  • Establish effective working relationships with departmental managers, colleagues, and external stakeholders;
  • Identify and recommend process improvements and cost-saving measures;
  • Shadow, learn and serve as business continuity cover-off for other members of the Finance Team including the Controller as necessary;
  • Willing to travel occasionally and work flexible hours to meet deadlines, as required; and
  • Other duties as assigned.
    This role is partially supported by the CAPER initiative. CAPER is an externally funded initiative of the AFMC.

As part of this role, the Senior Financial Analyst is responsible for the following specific tasks for the initiative:

  • Oversee all financial transactions related to the CAPER initiative, with a focus on identifying and addressing any anomalous transactions;
  • Produce accurate and timely monthly departmental financial reports to ensure up-to-date financial status and performance tracking;
  • Conduct bi-weekly meetings with the CAPER Program Lead to review and discuss the financial status of the initiative, ensuring alignment with financial goals and objectives;
  • Actively assist in the collection of accounts receivable from various stakeholders, ensuring timely and accurate receipt of funds;
  • Provide regular financial reporting on CAPER investment accounts, which are maintained separately from AFMC accounts;
  • Provide comprehensive support to meet all audit requirements and ensure compliance with financial regulations.

What you’ll need to be successful in the role (essential qualifications):

  • University degree accounting or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 3-5 years’ experience in project accounting and budgeting
  • Demonstrated experience working in the Not-For-Profit or Charitable sector
  • Familiar with government contribution agreements and CRA guidelines
  • Advanced knowledge of QuickBooks Online and Microsoft Excel)
  • Advanced knowledge Quickbooks system add ons such as Dext, Approval Max and Plooto or related experience implementing other automated AP processing systems
  • Strong knowledge of Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (ASNPO) financial reporting, budgeting, audit procedures, and internal controls
  • Experience working in SharePoint or Google Suite environment
  • Strong Knowledge of sales taxes (GST/HST and rebates)
  • Team player with proven analytical, organizational, training, presentation, and problem-solving skills
  • Effective time management and organizational skills with the ability to work well under pressure and manage tight deadlines with a high attention to detai
