Description:

JOINING ARUP

Arup’s purpose, shared values and collaborative approach has set us apart for over 75 years, guiding how we shape a better world.

THE OPPORTUNITY

We are currently seeking a Senior Fire Engineer to join our UK team. This role is vital to help deliver our growing portfolio of exciting projects and to assist in the development of our diverse, innovative, multi-cultural and self-motivated team of fire safety consultants.
The successful candidate will complement our fire safety team and help deliver fire safety engineering services for our clients. You will be part of a 400+ strong fire safety skills network across 20 offices around the World. Our members have access to Arup University, which oversees over 50 other skills networks, all learning and development offering, an in-house library and a foresight and innovation team.
The successful candidate will manage the fire safety input to a range of different projects, oversee and mentor junior engineers, with support by the project director and the wider team. The role will involve interactive and collaborative working with fire safety colleagues and multidisciplinary teams at Arup.
Our projects are diverse and range from conceptual fire strategy development through to handing over landmark projects; we undertake fire safety research to develop evidence-based solutions for novel fire safety hazards and strive to find ways to improve safety equity for the most vulnerable. We do this for our clients, and in collaboration with academia and industry. We strive to enable a sustainable, resilient built environment, using the latest knowledge and expertise, assisted by our own in-house digital tools and software.
At Arup, you belong to an extraordinary collective – in which we encourage individuality to thrive. Our strength comes from how we respect, share and connect our diverse experiences, perspectives and ideas.
You will have the opportunity do socially useful work that has meaning – to Arup, to your career, to our members and to the clients and communities we serve.

Key experience may include:

  • Experience in a fire engineering consultancy or similar environment.
  • Extensive background in delivering evidence-based fire safety solutions for UK based projects, in a range of different sectors.
  • Knowledge of applicable legislation and guidance used in the UK, and awareness of the new regulatory regime.
  • Experienced in leading client and stakeholder meetings, and able to explain technically complicated fire safety matters to lay persons to enable informed decision making.
  • Familiar with RIBA Plan of Work or other design frameworks (e.g. GRIP).
  • Aware and striving to deliver on the Total Fire Safety concept: from client brief, through design and construction; taking account of the socio-technical context, seeking to pre-empt fire safety issues common at different stages of a project, so that the end result delivers on the client brief.
  • Experience in managing other engineers in the development and implementation of fire strategies, projects, and research initiatives.
  • Experience in management of financial performance on projects.
  • Experience in negotiation and agreement of scope, fee, contractual terms and conditions with clients. Understand and manage the scope and relevant programme constraints of projects, experience in project changes management.
  • Experience in presenting and discussing design solutions to approving authorities and other stakeholders.
  • Experience in teaching, mentoring and supporting junior engineers in their career development.
  • Have the ability to work on multiple projects concurrently, working to tight deadlines and juggling multiple demands and deliverables.
  • Experience in business development activities and establishing a network of clients/ colleagues inside and outside Arup

Responsibilities:

We strive for excellence and invest in the development of our people. You will have access to a wide range of training and development opportunities, including CPD events. A history of gaining consent for prescriptive and performance-based design solutions from approving authorities is also important.
As a senior member of the fire safety practice, you will have strong meeting and negotiating skills and a background of managing project teams and finances. You will be a team player, generously sharing your knowledge and experience with others, and open to feedback and curious to learn and grow yourself.
You will have a Bachelor’s degree in a relevant degree subject (fire engineering, other types of engineering, or architecture related degree) and will be preferably a Chartered Engineer with a relevant institution such as the Institution of Fire Engineers or be close to gaining Chartered Engineer status.
