Job Description
Reporting to the Operations Director, the Senior General Manager will support the Senior Management team in the development and delivery of the business/strategic plans for the Spalding site and to oversee the management and achievement of all operational, customer and people related KPI’s for the Spalding Operation. Supporting the Management team in the delivery of their responsibilities and take a pro-active role in their development as part of the overall succession planning process.
The responsibility may also include other Fowler Welch site operations either directly or as a coordinating role.
Working hours: Monday to Friday, 08.30-17.30

QUALIFICATIONS

  • An established Senior Manager with strong commercial business acumen
  • Significant experience of operational management in FMCG industry
  • Experience of managing people and large teams
  • Experience of a multi-modal fleet including temperature controlled
  • Comprehensive knowledge of major retailer supply chain requirements
  • A comprehensive knowledge of the commercial marketplace
  • Rate calculation methods and their application to a commercial contract
  • Experience of managing budgets
  • Account management
  • Warehouse management

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure there is an appropriate management and supervisory structure in place for the operation
  • Coach and develop reporting Managers in people management activities and oversee the implementation of a people training/development plans to assist succession planning
  • Progress all people related plans for the site including clear lines of communication and engagement
  • Work alongside the Transport & Warehouse Managers to ensure communication, best practice and efficiency is continually reviewed and improved
  • Maintain relationships with existing customers to ensure all their service requirements are met. Where there is a formal agreement own the relationship such that all KPIs, review meetings, rates reviews, and operational solutions are progressed
  • Maintain and continuously look to improve customer service levels and ensure the required KPI and D.O.T levels are achieved.
  • Engage in customer liaison on a pro-active basis and as required by team members, colleagues and senior management
  • In conjunction with the commercial team identify business opportunities with both existing customers and prospective new customers and prepare business proposals
  • Create appropriate customer solutions and own implementation of that new business, coordinating internal and external activities. Deliver the actions required to ensure a smooth onboarding process for the customer
  • Liaise with other sites to provide ‘whole service solutions’ to both existing and prospective customers
  • In conjunction with the Finance team create the budget and forecast files in line with the agreed timescales for the operations you have responsibility for. All assumptions and KPIs should be clearly articulated and agreed
  • Ensure the budgetary controls are managed, take responsibility for ensuring the weekly P&L is in line with and planned to exceed budgetary expectations
  • Monitor costs against budget and pro-actively look for ways to make the business more efficient
  • Review and authorise all appropriate operational POs ensuring company financial rules are met
  • Oversee the control of the Operation through the management team to ensure all operational matters are owned and resolved efficiently and in line with all legal requirements
  • Ensure the transport fleet/all assets are operated in a commercially viable way
  • Continually review and revise the balance of operational resource to ensure maximum efficiency, operational capability and service. Areas include own colleague and agency numbers, fleet numbers, network and wider group application and sub-contractor utilisation
  • Devise and manage a continuous improvement policy
  • Ensure sustainability and carbon reduction is promoted with clear actions and owners
  • Ensure IT systems supporting the operation are understood, utilised fully and developed to enhance the operation
  • Oversee the driver development plan and ensure the management of the drivers and subcontractors is managed efficiently, legally and at the lowest cost
  • Enforce the highest standards of safety and hygiene, in conjunction with appropriate colleagues, to ensure that Company procedures are followed
  • Overall responsibility for BRC requirements of the site and ensure the Operation adheres to the demands of this
  • Oversee the maintenance and development of the Spalding warehouse, yard and office facilities to ensure they are in good repair and co-ordinate development projects as agreed
