We are currently recruiting for a Senior Geotechnical Engineer – Operations (SGEO) to lead and manage our pit development team at Newmont Boddington Gold. The leadership role is responsible for ensuring provision of safe and appropriate geotechnical services to support our open pit mining operations. Our pit development team provides guidance related to pit wall scaling, ground support requirements and waste dump management to help mitigate against rockfall and slope stability. Boddington is a mature operation that has been mining it’s hard rock resource for over fifteen years. A comprehensive Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP) currently exists along with a full array of Standard Operating Procedures for various work activities and controls including Trigger Action Response Plans.
Leadership responsibilities include providing support, guidance and training for a team comprising four geotechnical engineers and two technicians. Our rope access team site manager also reports through the SGEO role.
The SGEO is required to assist the Geotechnical Superintendent in establishing and maintaining geotechnical modelling, performing geotechnical analyses and providing geotechnical slope design recommendations for interim and final walls. This includes ensuring geological, geotechnical and hydrogeological aspects are considered during implementation of the mine plan to help ensure an appropriate level of risk for the operation so far as reasonably practicable and in accordance with the site’s Ground Control Management Plan (GCMP). The SGEO may be required to provide coverage for the Geotechnical Superintendent and/or Geotechnical Engineer.
The role is being offered on a family friendly 5:2:4:3 roster and reports to the Geotechnical Superintendent.

Responsibilities:

  • Overseeing a dynamic team of geotechnical engineers and technicians and delegate tasks as per existing RACI matrix.
  • Provide appropriate levels of support, coaching and training to team members.
  • Provision of timely guidance related to pit development initiatives including developing job packages and liaising with short term planning schedulers and operational teams.
  • Ensure inspections and work are completed according to GCMP requirements.
  • Perform risk assessments for geotechnical hazards.
  • Guide the development of monthly and 3 monthly pit development work schedules.
  • Assist in the design, implementation, and operation of ground and slope performance monitoring systems including critically alarmed slope stability radars.
  • Develop, delegate and quality review Field Work plans related to rope access scaling and different types of ground support and rockfall mitigation initiatives.
  • Ensure QA/QC records are collected and stored in an orderly and accessible manner.
  • Guide pit wall reconciliation tasks to assess achieved wall conditions and work to improve the design, planning and execution of wall control blasting and excavation of pit walls.
  • Supervise and coordinate consultants and contractors for Ground Support, Drilling, Test work and required geotechnical studies.
  • Engage in innovation, continuous improvement and R&D initiatives.
  • Assist in maintaining geotechnical models e.g. rock mass model, geotechnical domain model, and hydrogeological model.
  • Perform geotechnical analyses using software appropriate for the task (eg Rocscience Slide2, Swedge, RocPlane, Dips, GEM4D, Trajec3D etc)
