Description:
THE OPPORTUNITY:
Tetra Tech is adding a Senior Geotechnical Engineer to our Arctic Engineering team based in Edmonton, AB.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in civil or geological engineering with a preference for a master’s degree in geotechnical engineering.
- A minimum of 12 years of relevant geotechnical engineering and foundation design experience.
- Arctic engineering and permafrost engineering experience is preferred, but not necessary. Experience in geotechnical reconnaissance and site characterization is essential.
- Proven capabilities in planning and supervising geotechnical investigations and in writing reports and technical communications.
- Strong all-round academic knowledge of geotechnical engineering.
- Expertise in foundation engineering.
- Previous experience in site reconnaissance and investigations to assess site suitability for development of infrastructure.
- Experience with engineering design software will be an advantage. Examples include Plaxis, Lpile, GRLWEAP, DYNA, FLAC and Settle 3D.\
- Previous experience using GeoStudio 2007 Products and MS Office is essential.
- Experience or aptitude for proposal writing, client development, working in a team setting to meet timelines and other skills appropriate to consulting.
- Excellent communication skills (both oral and written).
- Some travel will be required in this position throughout Western Canada, and candidates must be prepared to undertake short field assignments possibly lasting up to one week at a time.
- Strong people skills and an ability to work in a multidisciplinary team environment.
- Previous experience leading, mentoring and coaching team members.
- Registered as a Professional Engineer in western or northern Canada.
- Must be legally entitled to work in Canada and possess a valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license (or equivalent).

Responsibilities:
- Developing sound technical solutions to assist in the design and evaluation of challenging geotechnical applications, particularly in permafrost environments and with a soil mechanics focus.
- Preparing technical letters and reports and participating in proposal development.
- Supervising and mentoring junior staff members.
- Planning resources, schedules, and managing projects to be on budget and on time.
- Communicating with coworkers, clients, and sub consultants.
- Collecting and analyzing geotechnical and permafrost information.
- Reviewing reports prepared by junior staff and preparing geotechnical evaluation reports including recommendations and site development in permafrost environments.
- Participating in design of civil earthwork structures and development of construction specifications.
- Planning and supervising geotechnical investigations.
- Evaluating geologic conditions and geotechnical characteristics for assessment and design of shallow and deep foundations, retaining structures and earth structures.
- Conducting and reviewing slope stability and embankment assessments and completing associated designs.
- Reclamation earthworks design.
- Conduct activities in line with internal procedures, legislation, and industry standards.
- Pursue continuous professional development and maintain a high degree of discipline knowledge and awareness.
