We’re currently seeking a Senior Health Physicist (Sr. HP) to join our esteemed team. As a key member of the Health Physics Group (HPG), reporting directly to the Health Physics Group Lead, you’ll play a pivotal role in upholding our standards of excellence. Your expertise will be essential in providing leadership within HPG and offering site-wide technical support to ensure compliance with our Class 1B Particle Accelerator Operating License, the Radiation Protection Plan, and associated policies and procedures.

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

  • Expert knowledge of fundamental nuclear physics of radiation phenomena and accelerator systems and operations
  • Broad knowledge in nuclear physics theory and radiation phenomena, all aspects of health physics, radiation detectors, applied statistics, and scientific computing applications
  • Proven understanding and use of the principles and applications of health physics, including internal and external personnel dosimetry and techniques for calculating radioactive inventories, doses, and shielding properties and use of radiation detectors and associated data acquisition systems, including set-up, calibration, and troubleshooting and operation of a wide variety of measurement devices
  • Data recording, handling, and analysis; statistics including a strong familiarity with various computer software packages
  • Specialized knowledge of radiation and emissions monitoring systems and procedures
  • In-depth comprehension of regulations and policies pertaining to radiation protection, radioactive substances, and radiation devices
  • Collaborative skills.
  • Must possess advanced writing skills to generate technical documentation, operating procedures, and similar safety basis documentation.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite products. Knowledge of radiation shielding codes such as Microshield, MCNP, FLUKA, GEANT 4 desirable.
  • Excellent interpersonal, comprehension, interpretation, and oral and written communications skills.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND YEARS OF EXPERIENCE:

Advanced Science degree, or equivalent in a related science or engineering field + minimum of 8 years of applied health physics experience, or an equivalent combination of a related bachelor’s degree and years of experience. ABHP Certified Health Physicist (CHP) is preferred, but not required.
Applicants must be legally able to work in Canada on a permanent basis (Canadian Citizen or Permanent Resident).

$86,100.00 - $107,600.00

Responsibilities:

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Attends planning meetings, area walk downs, and project gate reviews to develop design criteria, hazard assessments, engineering controls, and monitoring requirements.
  • Ensure operations are monitored and controlled to keep radiation exposure limits for personnel within administrative limits and in accordance with the principles of ALARA.
  • Assists with personnel dose calculations in case of contamination incidents
  • Maintain and develop procedures and safe work methods to mitigate and decontaminate hazardous radiological conditions.
  • Consults with TRIUMF researchers and visiting scientists regarding new experiments to determine that radiation and radioactive materials to be generated, the monitoring or sampling requirements, and equipment needed to ensure radiological safety and regulatory compliance.
  • Instructs personnel in principles and regulations related to radiation hazards.
  • Generate and/or review operating procedures, safety analysis reports, safety notes,and other technical support documents, as needed for assigned projects.
  • For commissioning and decommissioning of systems and facilities, the position requires collaboration with a variety or research, engineering, and safety personnel to develop comprehensive plans that meet the acceptance criteria for the applicable regulatory agencies (e.gh., WorkSafeBC, CNSC, Health Canada,etc.).
  • Provide technical direction and guidance to TRIUMF staff, as needed.

Physical - This role requires the following physical activity be performed on a semi-regular basis;

  • Bending or Twisting the Body: The job requires leaning forwards or backwards or moving the body torsionally.
  • Carrying: The job requires holding things while moving.
  • Lifting: The job requires raising an object using the hands and arm

Environmental - This role may include entering areas with the potential for the following environmental exposure;

  • Sound and Noise: sound and noise levels that are distracting or uncomfortable.
  • Electricity: electrical energy - electrical circuitry, high tension wires, transformers, or other equipment that may be a potential source of electrical shock
  • Dangerous Chemical Substances: contaminants, such as pollutants, gases, dust, or odours through inhalation, ingestion, or contact with skin.
  • Radiation: radioactive substances or non-ionizing radiation such as radio frequencies and infrared, ultraviolet, or visible light that may adversely affect health
