About the role
Balfour Beatty are looking for a Senior Health, Safety and Wellbeing Advisor to join our Southern, Western, Eastern and Signalling (SWES) Rail team in Swindon.
The Senior Health, Safety and Wellbeing Advisor will support the project to drive health, safety and wellbeing performance, ensuring efficient and effective advice and support to meet and where possible exceed operational requirements supporting the Head of HS&E/HS&E Manager to achieve Zero Harm objectives.

What you’ll be doing

  • Implement Business Unit Zero Harm strategy through visible leadership to drive the delivery of the Zero Harm Action Plan.
  • Provide project teams with expert HS&E technical advice, guidance and support.
  • Collaboratively engage with both internal & external customers and the supply chain to promote zero harm delivery.
  • In conjunction with operational management complete a local and bespoke risk-based Service Level Agreement with each project which is kept under quarterly review to provide assurance that the project is compliant with HS&E requirements.
  • Undertake regular site inspections as per project risk matrix and produce formal reports using the Project Portal to record HS&E inspections.
  • Undertake regular checks on Health and Safety Risk Management highlighting risks and opportunities.
  • Provide expert support to investigate accidents, incidents and near miss events in accordance with Balfour Beatty Group Standards and company requirements.
  • Support work winning teams with quality HS&E responses for bids, proposals and PQQs for future projects.
  • Engage and develop relationships with design & engineering teams to eliminate and reduce HS&E risk through design.
  • Challenge the norm by innovating and improving the way we work, whilst keeping pace with industry change and promote successes.

Who we’re looking for

The following qualities/experience are essential:

  • Relevant H&S Diploma, NVQ or Degree (or equivalent level 6 qualification). May consider candidates with a certificate/qualification currently working towards one of these qualifications with relevant on-site experience and to have or be working toward Chartered Membership of IOSH.
  • Strong understanding of UK Health and Safety Regulatory Framework.
  • Ability to influence and promote a positive HS&E culture by engaging and conversing at all levels.
  • Ability to undertake project planning, project management and work to budgets.
  • Competence in incident investigation.
  • Ability to prepare formal written reports on HS&E topics.

Broad experience of complex construction and civils projects (or experience from an equivalent sector).
