JOB DESCRIPTION:

The Law Project of the Chicago Coalition to end Homelessness is seeking a senior-level Housing Attorney to join our Law Project team to advocate for people experiencing homelessness in Illinois through both direct representation and policy advocacy and to work to advance racial equity.
Reasonable accommodation will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide civil legal services to people experiencing homelessness or at-risk of homelessness. Areas of focus include housing law and civil rights, including fair housing cases, eviction defense, voucher/subsidy termination, and enforcement of the Illinois Bill of Rights for the Homeless Act. Other areas of law may include access to identification documents, public benefits and other civil legal services.
  • Conduct regular legal clinics and community outreach at various shelters and drop-in centers, schools, health centers and other community locations.
  • Participate in the Law Project’s impact litigation to address systemic issues and barriers to people experiencing homelessness, including civil rights cases.
  • Participate in local and state-level coalitions and campaigns to promote policies and laws that reduce barriers to stable housing and protect the rights of people experiencing homelessness.
  • Assist Law Project staff on other projects as needed, including providing support, training and guidance to Law Project Equal Justice Works Fellow(s).
  • Develop and conduct training for attorneys and other professionals on civil rights, housing and other legal rights of people experiencing homelessness.
  • Create and maintain “know your rights” and outreach materials on housing law, including updating the Housing Chapter of the Illinois Homeless Youth Handbook.
  • Supervision of law students and possible future supervision opportunities.
  • Work in collaboration with all CCH departments—CCH believes strongly in interdepartmental collaboration and expects all staff to work in close partnership with the other departments at the organization.
