ABOUT US
Western Engineering Outreach offers a variety of fun, hands-on programming for children and youth from kindergarten to Grade 12 – ranging from in-school workshops to summer camps to weekend clubs to community events – designed to nurture curiosity, build skills and increase confidence in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). Western Engineering Outreach additionally offers workshops and resources for educators to support their vital role in shaping the student experience. Our goal is to make STEM approachable and engaging for everyone. Each year, Western Engineering Outreach hires dedicated high-school and post-secondary student instructors who are passionate about sharing their love of STEM to deliver programs.

EDUCATION:
- Must be a post-secondary student returning to studies in the fall
- Preference for students studying Engineering, Science, Education or Arts and Humanities
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- First Aid and CPR-C Certification required
- Police Vulnerable Sector Check (VSC) required prior to employment start date
EXPERIENCE:
- Previous work experience in a similar role or within the department
- Experience facilitating summer camps or other youth recreation or outreach programs
SKILLS, ABILITIES & EXPERTISE:
- Develops, prepares, and delivers camp, in-school workshop, community programming, and special events including those for children and youth under-represented in STEM
- Develop and test age-appropriate STEM activities
- Written and verbal communication skills to express ideas clearly, and adapt communication style to suit the situation and audience
- Ability to maintain a positive, outgoing attitude with genuine customer service orientation
- Reliable and dependable with the ability to consistently work assigned schedule, including occasional evening and weekend shifts
- Ability to apply creativity, innovation and resourcefulness to daily work
- Ability to follow processes and practices with high attention to detail

- For Lead Senior Instructors:
o Demonstrate effective outreach delivery techniques to more junior members of the team
o Manage the behavior of program participants including employing tactics to support the social and emotional wellbeing of program participants
o Lead role in coordinating the day-to-day operations of “off-site” summer camps
o Supervise sign in/out processes to ensure policies and procedures are followed
Responsibilities:
This position is responsible for planning, coordinating and delivering science and engineering programming for children and youth through May to August to provide community outreach and engagement opportunities to youth, community partners and teachers in the London & Middlesex Community. Western Engineering Outreach provides a pathway for youth to experience Western Engineering firsthand and start their journey to potentially becoming future students at Western University.
The Senior Instructor will have responsibility for carrying out activities which require some specialization of skills. The incumbent will be responsible for providing support to faculty or staff, and for effectively carrying out a variety of tasks related to STEM outreach and the Discovery Western Summer Camp in accordance with policies, procedures, and instructions received from their supervisor. The incumbent will take guidance from their supervisor, and work productively and courteously with the Outreach team and other members of the Western community. As part of the duties, the Senior Instructor may be required to run an off-site camp and stay overnight (e.g., Sarnia and/or other locations).
