Legal plays an important role in protecting the Group’s reputation by helping to future-proof the organisation through robust legal risk and issue advisory. Responsible for providing comprehensive legal advice to senior management and all businesses and functions, the team offers a diverse range of legal skills, jurisdictional experience and practice specialisms across all countries and territories in which our businesses operate.
We are currently seeking an experienced individual to join this team in the role of Senior Legal Counsel – WPB.

In this role you will:

  • Provide advice and support on legal issues, with a particular focus on the HSBC UK Everyday Banking business (but with flexibility to support other areas if needed). This includes current accounts, overdrafts, savings and FX products.
  • Provide Risk Steward leadership and oversight of activities to mitigate legal risks in the UK Everyday Banking business, in accordance with the Risk Management Framework.
  • Participate in key governance committees and forums as required.
  • Support for HSBC’s simplification agenda, including products, processes and terms and conditions.
  • Update the UK Everyday Banking business on changes to law and regulation.

Requirements

To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:

  • Qualified solicitor with relevant mid to senior level experience gained within a financial institution and/or top tier private practice.
  • Knowledge and experience of retail banking law is essential (e.g. BCOBs, PSRs)
  • Knowledge and experience of regulated lending is preferable (e.g. overdrafts, CCA)
  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills with experience of adapting style and approach to the audience is essential
  • The ability to think independently being mindful of maintaining an appropriate balance between management and mitigation of legal risk and business efficacy
