Job Summary
Manage all aspects of the state income tax compliance process ensuring adherence to deadlines, accuracy, and conformity with state regulations in order to reduce the Company’s overall tax burden and risk. Manage and oversee the preparation and review of state income tax returns including the calculation of apportionment and state modifications. Assist in driving process improvement opportunities in the tax function to enhance processes, efficiency, accuracy, and controls. Monitor state nexus and filings to ensure compliance with state tax laws and regulations, identifying any potential areas of risk or exposure. Research and interpret changes in state tax laws and regulations, assessing their impact on the company and recommending appropriate actions. Working with State Strategy and State Audit, as needed, on various projects.
Additional activities include: Partners with the Federal tax compliance, and Tax Credits and Incentives teams to minimize WBA’s overall tax liability, reduce WBA’s effective tax rate, and enhance WBA’s cash flow. Thinks strategically while engaging in day-to-day tactical details based on in-depth compliance experience and tax technical knowledge. Communicates complex compliance and tax concepts - written and verbally. Directs and coordinates the state compliance team on development of compliance issues. Identifies and executes key tax strategies in order to reduce the Company’s overall tax burden/risk. Ensures that tax planning initiatives are properly incorporated into the tax compliance processes. Authority to sign returns, reports, filings and other communications on behalf of the Company under penalties of perjury, as necessary. Serves as a leader on cross functional team(s), providing leadership, direction, knowledge and advice to team members and senior management. Develops departmental plans and organizational priorities; is accountable for the performance and results of tax stewardship. Addresses technical issues and recommends solutions. Serves as a champion for people development across the Company. Develops and executes our tax strategy through innovative & creative thinking in a manner which reduces our overall tax cost/tax burden to the Company. Drives process improvement opportunities for tax function.
Job Responsibilities
- Develops and executes short and long-term tax savings strategies by collaborating with the various tax functions. Directly impacts the Company’s tax rate to optimize Earnings per Share.
- Reviews and ensures that the tax filings minimize the overall tax liability to Walgreens leading to tax savings.
- Closely collaborates with Finance and Accounting on tax and accounting issues impacting the Company’s financials.
- Serves as a catalyst and leader on organizational and people development initiatives. Develops, mentors and coaches employees.
- Participates in divisional and company-wide projects and programs to develop engagement for division-wide and company-wide initiatives.
- Collaborates with business unit leaders and Finance/Accounting to minimize tax disputes and pursue opportunities.
- Authority to sign returns, reports, filings and other communications on behalf of the Company under penalties of perjury, as necessary.
- Identifies and evaluates tax issues during due diligence phase of Mergers & Acquisitions process. Manages due diligence and integration process for acquisitions/dispositions and serves as core member of tax acquisition team.
- Leads research of tax laws, regulations and case law to resolve complex tax issues and resolves technical issues.
- Closely monitors tax legislation and determines the tax effect of proposed changes and newly enacted tax laws. Collaborates with the Government Relations Team on lobbying efforts on specific tax legislation for key issues, as necessary.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree and at least 4 years of experience with public accounting, corporate tax and/or accounting at a firm, government agency or company with sales in excess of $1 billion OR High School/GED and at least 7 years of experience with public accounting, corporate tax and/or accounting at a firm, government agency or company with sales in excess of $1 billion.
- At least 4 years of experience researching and interpreting technical tax laws and regulations.
- At least 4 years of experience executing tax strategy based on the key objectives and goals of the Company.
- Experience developing and delivering presentations to various audience levels within an organization.
- At least 2 years of experience contributing to financial decisions in the workplace.
- At least 2 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or cross-functional team leadership.
- Willing to travel up to 10% of the time for business purposes (within state and out of state).
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree and at least 10 years of experience with public accounting, corporate tax and/or accounting at a firm, government agency or company with sales in excess of $1 billion.
- CPA, JD or Master’s degree in Taxation.
- Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Finance, Accounting or Economics.
- At least 8 years of experience researching and interpreting technical tax laws and regulations.
- At least 5 years of experience executing tax strategy based on the key objectives and goals of the Company.
- At least 4 years of direct leadership, indirect leadership and/or cross-functional team leadership.
