Description:

Job Purpose: To take an active part in the provision of the MRI service whilst maintaining the highest standards of MR imaging and patient care at all times. Organise service provision under supervision of the MRI team leader. To directly supervise Radiographic Assistants to maximise throughput and monitor image quality. Main Duties and Responsibilities: Clinical Carry out MRI imaging to agreed standards and protocols incorporating the College of Radiographers and departmental guidelines Be sensitive to the needs of the patient in their care during the MRI investigation Be responsible for controlling access within the MRI department and supervise non-MR safety trained personnel in the restricted area Use experience and judgment to interpret images and perform extra sequences as appropriate Administer Drugs and Contrast Agents as outlined by relevant PGDs for this band Assist in vetting MR referrals in line with referral guidelines, to make the decision to reject requests which do not meet these guidelines.
To organise and prioritise workload as required, considering the patients clinical condition and the imaging request, in a safe and efficient manner. Participate in the MRI Spinal On-Call rota, extended working day system and weekend duties. To liaise with other areas of the Trust to ensure the best patient care by having a flexible approach to use of staff and equipment. To communicate and liaise with all members Trust staff including the multidisciplinary team and to deliver sensitive information to patients and carers where there may be barriers to communication, ensuring that patients understand the procedure and receive appropriate reassurance.
To record data concerning the patients examination, in line with department policies and protocols, and factors relating to the patients clinical condition. Maintain a professional attitude for the dignity and well-being of the patient and ensuring confidentiality at all times. Maintain the highest professional standards and good public image both verbally and visually. Actively assist in the clinical education/training of trainee assistant practitioners, radiography apprentices, radiographic assistants and radiography students, as required.
Participate in research, technical developments and introduce new techniques and instruct staff on the same under the direction of the Team Lead Radiographer and with the agreement of the relevant medical staff. Assist in the development and production of protocols, procedures and training manuals as directed by the Team Leader. Technical Fully competent with the operation of all appropriate Imaging equipment within the department. Competent with the operation of the Radiology Information System and PACS.
Fully competent with the operation of all additional equipment within the department such as suction/oxygen, hoists and other manual handling devices, contrast injectors etc. Participate in the departmental quality assurance and audit programme. Professional Maintain, monitor and where possible, improve standards of service and quality of work. Maintain a high standard of work and strive for continual improvements in radiographic standards and patient care.
Relate to and communicate with all staff in a courteous and helpful manner at all times and act as a role model for the department. Relate to and communicate with all patients and visitors in a sensitive and empathetic manner. To assess the need for and utilise the appropriate levels of tact and persuasion as required. Assist in promoting the Imaging service as a high quality professional patient-care activity to patients, visitors and other health-care workers within and outside the Trust.
Take personal responsibility for organising attendance at the Trusts Mandatory Training programme. Participate in the Trusts appraisal process and consider personal and professional needs and translate these into realistic annual objectives and implementation plans. Maintain ones own Education and Development in line with Divisional needs and CoR Guidelines, via Continuous Professional Development. To undertake additional training in order to permit the implementation of service development.
Undertake studies, research and audits as required by the Department. To present these findings at audit and governance meetings as requested. Management and Leadership Liaise with other Radiographers; Managers, Nursing staff; Radiologists, Secretarial, A&C, and Support Workers within Imaging as well as Clinicians and Nurses within and outside the Trust in order to promote an efficient Imaging service which places the needs of the patient at the centre of all activities. Take responsibility for the day to day running of the department in the absence of the Team Leader.
Supervise the activity of junior staff, intervene where necessary and thus ensure a high quality service is always provided to patients and service user. Ensure high standards of cleanliness of the environment and equipment. Assist in the Recruitment and Selection, and undertake Personal Development Reviews, of certain staff groups as delegated by the Team Leader. Record and report all breakdowns and faults of equipment to the Team Leader.
Record and report all defects and breakages of fixtures and fittings and take appropriate action to instigate repair. Record and report any accident or injury occurring in the Department to the Team Leader. Be responsible for controlling access within the MRI department. Be aware of the implications of the Health and Safety at Work Act, IR(ME)R Regulations and ensure the guidelines are followed.
Participate in process redesign as required. Deputise for the Team Leader in their absence, if requested. Carry out duties e.g. lectures, presentations, etc.
