Description:

ESSENTIAL SKILLS

  • Significant professional experience in the space industry with focused on Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST), Space Situational Awareness (SSA) and/or space systems with a comprehensive understanding of Space Weather, SSA and SST modelling and analysis.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral), to articulate and communicate technical detail clearly and concisely with colleagues, customers and partner organisations at all levels. Able to prepare detailed reports and present where necessary.
  • Able to work effectively and with initiative both independently and as part of a team in a way that is collaborative and adaptable.
  • Effective time management and capable of managing multiple work streams.
  • Broad understanding and experience in data analysis and analytical software utilisation.
  • Experience in the development of automated scripts and/or simple software products.
  • A comprehensive understanding of mathematics, scientific processes and requirements.
  • An understanding of IT systems and experienced in the use of Microsoft Office applications.
  • Undertake mentoring and training of junior Orbital Analysts, supporting team development and skills uplift.
  • Willing and eligible to hold SC security clearance and obtain DV clearance if required.

DESIRABLE SKILLS OF INTEREST

  • Professional experience in the space industry with focused on Space Surveillance and Tracking (SST), Space Situational Awareness (SSA) and/or space systems with a comprehensive understanding of Space Weather, SSA and SST modelling and analysis.
  • Extensive experience in working in the SSA/SST space domain including in conducting collision avoidance analysis, orbit determination, fragmentation and re-entry analysis in an operational setting.
  • Demonstrable technical expertise in the specification, development and equipping of national or commercial analytical centres providing operational support to collision avoidance, orbit determination, fragmentation and re-entry analysis, including expertise in the development and improvement of analytic tools and algorithms.
  • Demonstrable technical expertise in the technical capability and tasking of sensors providing data to support operational collision avoidance, orbit determination, fragmentation and re-entry analysis across all orbital regimes. Expertise should include demonstrable experience of radar, optical and laser ranging systems.
  • Outstanding reputation within the international SSA/SST community as attested by a minimum of three referees from civil, commercial or military organisations.
  • Hands on experience of working at high classification (at least Secret) in an operational analysis centre – this may be military, but this is not a pre-requisite.
  • Ability to develop and maintain complex operational processes and requirements and capable of leading a team effectively and professionally to deliver results.
  • Skilled in the one or more of the following programming languages: Fortran, C/C++, Java, Matlab, Python, SQL, Java-script. Experienced in the development and utilisation of SST.SSA related computer simulations.
  • An understanding of celestial mechanics, astrodynamics and atmospheric physics.
  • A bachelor’s degree, ideally in a relevant field (physics, mathematics, engineering or science).

Responsibilities:

SUMMARY OF ROLE:

Raytheon UK are part of Raytheon Technologies, one of the largest aerospace, intelligence services providers, and defence manufacturers in the world. The Senior Orbital Analyst role will be responsible for the delivery of Space Domain Awareness (SDA) duties to support the safety of civil and commercial satellite operations. The Senior Orbital Analyst will have an expertise in operational collision avoidance, orbit determination, fragmentation and re-entry analysis across all orbital regimes and will be accountable for the quality of the technical services provided to the customer. Additionally, the Senior Orbital Analyst will support the UK Space Agency on national and international programmes as required with senior technical expertise. With planned 2024/25 revenue in excess $45m, this role contributes to the capability of the newly formed Space and ISR Mission Area. We have ambitious plans to grow into new international markets over our long-range plan.
This role is based at RAF High Wycombe however the successful candidate will be expected to travel across the UK to support customer needs as and when required. The holder of this role will need to possess SC clearance (preferred) or be capable of possessing SC clearance.

MAIN DUTIES:

As the Senior Orbital Analyst, you will lead on defining the technical and security requirements, along with the performance standards necessary to integrating new SDA sensors into the UK network. You will be expected to support the customer and partner organisations with technical advice related to the continuing evolution of the UK Space Domain Awareness Capability in terms of both its infrastructure, software and human assets. This will include, but not be limited to, providing advice on the future development, equipping and operations of the customer, supporting the technical delivery and implementation of such developments and advising on back-office processing and large data constructs that may evolve from such activities. This role will present the opportunity to support the customer and wider organisations in technical engagement with global partners and institutions in respect to SDA.

ROLE & RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Work and collaborate with cross-functional teams and various stakeholders, including partners, customers, and end-users.
  • Undertake structured analysis of technical issues, translating this analysis into technical designs that describe a solution.
  • Support the SDA process based on an intimate knowledge of the customer, users and technology.
  • Support the Chief Engineer(s) and CTO through capturing customer requirements to developing requirement sets leading to actionable outcomes and value for the customer.
  • Support the safety of civil, commercial and MOD operations through delivery of SDA.
  • Support UK Space Agency programmes of interest both nationally and internationally, through delivery of technical expertise and knowledge.
  • Identify opportunities for innovation and improvement, working with the team to continually recognise and deliver value.
