An exciting and unique opportunity exists for talented and passionate individuals to join the The Land Justice Unit within the First Peoples - State Relationup as a Senior Policy Officer at the Department of Premier and Cabinet. We have three ongoing positions on offer.
The First Peoples - State Relations Group supports an extensive program of priority work with First Peoples, by a strong understanding of self-determination to our work practices and in providing clear and robust advice to the Minister for Treaty and First Peoples, Premier, Cabinet and Senior Executives.
The Land Justice Unit (LJU) is responsible for leading the Government’s negotiation and implementation of agreements under the Traditional Owner Settlement Act 2010 (Vic) (TOS Act) and resolution of claims made under the Native Title Act 1993 (Cth).
Reporting to the Manager, Traditional Owner Outcomes, as a Senior Policy Officer you will be assigned projects to assist groups and government to negotiate and implement agreements. You will also be involved in associated policy development, stakeholder engagement, research, education and training, monitoring and evaluation. Infrequent after-hours work and travel from Melbourne may be required. You will also be committed to progress the Victorian Government’s nation leading work with First Peoples through their strategic leadership and high-quality public administration.

MANDATORY REQUIREMENTS

  • A relevant tertiary qualification in law, public policy, humanities or related field and/or equivalent relevant experience is required.

Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of native title, land rights, or equivalent processes and the broad issues affecting Victorian Traditional Owner groups and the ability to communicate sensitively and effectively with Victorian Traditional Owner groups and their representatives.
  • Demonstrated policy skills, including analysing and critically evaluating information and assessing the potential implications and risks of proposed policy options.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage the realisation of project and/or program benefits and outcomes through implementation and delivery phases.
  • Highly developed interpersonal and stakeholder management skills, with an ability to establish and maintain working relationships, provide clear and accurate advice on processes and policies, work effectively, influence and negotiate with a diverse range of stakeholders.
  • Written communication skills, especially in relation to the preparation of complex briefs, letters, emails and reports, where clear, concise and grammatically correct language and a deep appreciation of the audience and how written materials may be interpreted is needed.
  • Strong verbal communication with the ability to provide clear advice across a range of formats, adapt communication style depending on the audience, and translate complex technical concepts in an engaging manner to a non-technical audience
