Description:

SENIOR PORTFOLIO UNDERWRITER

  • Opportunity to influence the shaping of our underwriting strategy and risk appetite
  • A blend of technical underwriting and strategic project involvement, providing variety and responsibility that significantly impacts business performance
  • Hybrid role with 80% homeworking and 20% based from Stratford upon Avon, Bristol or Glasgow

ABOUT YOU

With a strong technical background in commercial general insurance, you’ve rounded your knowledge and understanding to wider functions. Your technical underwriting expertise is particularly strong in commercial non-motor products, and you’ve demonstrated effective management of underwriting accounts and portfolios as well as input to the underwriting agenda and risk appetite.
We’re looking for:
-

Extensive experience: A proven track record in general insurance underwriting, particularly in managing risk selection and account performance.

  • Technical expertise: Strong technical skills in underwriting commercial non-motor products, with a good understanding of wider functions such as pricing.
  • Analytical skills: Proficient in data analysis, ideally with a particular aptitude for tools like Power BI, enabling strategic decision-making and insight generation.
  • Organisational and presentation skills: Highly organised, with excellent self-management and presentation abilities, capable of communicating complex ideas clearly and persuasively to a range of audiences.
  • Stakeholder management: Strong relationship-building and influencing skills, adept at managing diverse stakeholders and fostering collaborative environments.

Ideally, you’ll also have previous project management experience, helping to drive initiatives that align with business goals.
At NFU Mutual, we support an inclusive workplace and value all the differences that make us unique. We celebrate the creativity and innovation that comes from diverse perspectives and experiences and share a common vision of doing the right thing for our customers and employees.
We recognise that some candidates may experience barriers during the recruitment process. So, we encourage candidates to discuss any adjustments or accommodations they need to be the best they can be throughout our recruitment process.
We’re proud to be a Disability Confident Employer, a Race at Work and Women in Finance Charter signatory and welcome applications from people of all backgrounds, regardless of age, ethnicity, disability, neurodiversity, gender, religion, marital status, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic background.

Responsibilities:

In the role of Segment Underwriter at NFU Mutual, you’ll be at the forefront of shaping our underwriting strategy and ensuring its effective execution across a defined customer segment.
The position offers a unique opportunity to apply your expertise in underwriting to develop and refine risk appetite, determine appropriate rules and terms, and deliver profitable growth while managing insurance risk. You’ll play a critical role in translating strategic objectives into practical guidelines and processes for use by our Agents and Underwriters, ensuring consistency and optimal performance.
Your responsibilities will include deep dives into data and metrics to understand performance deviations and inform strategy adjustments. You’ll manage specific industry sectors / customer segments, taking a holistic approach to customer management that goes beyond individual insurance classes. This proactive involvement not only enhances the role’s impact within the organisation but also offers you the chance to engage with key stakeholders, including agents, brokers, and regional teams.
As the technical point of referral, you’ll handle complex cases and referrals, ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and fair outcomes for our members. Additionally, your input will be crucial in strategic projects focused on commercial growth and product development, helping shape the future risk mix and setting clear strategies for our regional and underwriting units.
