    The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking to fill several Senior Project Management Officer roles in the Census Program Management Office (Census PMO).

Responsibilities:

The Census PMO plays an important role in helping to coordinate and manage the 2026 Census Program. The purpose of the Census PMO is to set, maintain and enforce the practices, policies and standards for structuring and executing projects within the Census Program.
The 2026 Census of Population and Housing (the Census) will be Australia’s 19th national Census. The Census is a large and complex exercise, with the planning, development, testing and delivery spanning over seven years.

As a Senior Project Management Officer, your responsibilities may include:

  • aligning and tracking project objectives to comply with ABS goals, strategies and objectives, and monitoring the progress of the project across the life of the project
  • conduct thorough documentation and data analysis to gather insights and improve project management practices
  • implementing and maintaining PMO processes, policies, and standards to ensure consistency and quality in project management practices
  • incorporating project schedules into a program summary level and overseeing projects dependencies and interdependencies
  • supporting Census projects with management plans, closure reports, change controls and reporting commitment
  • maintaining the Program Library e.g. Project Management Plans (PMPs), Dossier, Closure
  • providing guidance on the use of project management methods, tools and software (e.g. Microsoft Project or Jira)
  • coordinating program assurance activities
  • implementing program workshop, risk or benefits management training for the project teams
  • monitoring strategic and operational risks and issues that may impact achievement of the Census Program objectives, and assessing risk management outcomes
  • applying governance policies and procedures to coordinate and report on project activities for internal reporting and program governance.
