ABOUT THE BUSINESS UNIT

The Energy unit delivers services to clients globally across several sectors including hydropower, nuclear, waste, renewable generation and transmission & distribution networks. Together we provide integrated engineering and project management services across the project lifecycle – from concept and design to construction and operations, to decommissioning or repowering and life extension. Together with our clients, we’re helping to deliver the energy transition globally.
Our Nuclear: Defebce and Civils team are looking for a Senior Planner to join our planning team on a major UK programme of work. This long-term and complex project promises to be motivating and challenging. It presents an excellent opportunity for the right person to become a central element of our team and an integral part of successful project delivery.

ABOUT YOU:

  • Applicants will have experience in a planning role developing detailed resourced schedules & applying Earned Value (EV) Techniques working on large scale or significant value projects within the civil engineering sector.
  • Experience leading a planning team to developing a portfolio of schedules, complete with the appropriate WBS & applicable coding required to manage & succinctly report the portfolio.
  • The ability to communicate clearly and succinctly with all stakeholders both within the project team & up through the Organisations’ reporting structure.
  • An ability to provide leadership & mentoring to lower planning grades, to formulate local processes / procedures and allocate work-share across a portfolio.
  • Experience of leading collaborative planning processes and working with different teams (engineers, contractors, suppliers, equipment operators, etc.) and the client to deliver optimal programme schedules.
  • Awareness of the latest technologies, procedures & innovations and how these may be applied to the benefit of the portfolio.

Other skills:

  • Excellent spoken and written communication skills.
  • Confidence in presenting to and speaking to external stakeholder bodies.
  • Commitment to continuous professional development.
  • Candidate preferred to be a member of a recognised body (i.e. APM / ACostE / Planning or Project Controls).

If you meet 80% or more of what we’re looking for, please still apply. We understand not everyone will meet all the requirements, but you might have skills we didn’t know we need.
Please be advised that offers for this role are conditional upon obtaining the appropriate level of Security Clearance.

We put equality, diversity, and inclusion at the heart of our business, seeking to promote fair employment procedures and practices to ensure equal opportunities for all. We encourage individual expression in our workplace and are committed to creating an inclusive environment where everyone feels they can contribute.

Responsibilities:

  • Able to manage a portfolio (typically <£10M per annum) of schedules, to fully understand the interactions between them & to explain the output to stakeholders at all levels. Can develop planning strategy within the portfolio and able to provide mentoring to lower planning grades.
  • Ability to ‘police’ a small portfolio, to ensure all schedules adhere to procedures and local practices / work instructions & that these are consistently applied.
  • Fully understands EV principles, able to explain variances within the portfolio & advise all stakeholders of potential mitigation options / recovery scenarios.
  • Ability to liaise with & take direction from lead & Management roles.
  • Ability to assess potential improvements to the structure of the schedule (including hierarchal coding) & to discuss and agree implementation measures with peers & key stakeholders.
  • Application of change control measures (ideally within the NEC contract model) & the ability to recognise when a change can be applied to both the baseline & working schedule.
  • Self-performs schedule integrity checking across the portfolio, including re-assessment of critical path & key deliverables on each update and communication of key issues to all relevant stakeholders.
  • Automatically liaises with other stakeholders regarding work to go & discussion / communication of this with the Cost Engineer, Project Manager & Project Control Manager, leading to underpinned EACs.

  • Ability to baseline & progress a portfolio of resourced schedules.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with and influence key individuals.
  • Ability to drive the project team to deliver to plan and constructively challenge any delay or deviation.
  • Collaboratively develop, maintain and present detailed project plans in 4D using Bentley Synchro software, Primavera P6 and relevant BIM models.
  • Appreciate and uphold the Health & Safety standards in all planning activities.
  • Ensure project plans capture the full project scope.
  • Assist in the proactive identification of opportunities and risks in the plan.
  • Ensure planning standards are maintained.
