TITLE: Senior Research and Extension Associate in Aquaculture Genetics
DEPARTMENT: School of Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences
REPORTS TO: Principal Investigator of Fish Reproduction and Genetics
CLASSIFICATION: Staff-12 months

JOB SUMMARY:

The Senior Research and Extension Associate in Aquaculture Genetics will serve as a support person for the Principal Investigator (P.I.) of Fish Reproduction and Genetics in the School of Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences at Kentucky State University. This position will conduct research in fish reproduction and genetics (50%) also support and participate in extension/outreach activities (50%) related to advanced technology in fish genetics and selective breeding.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED:

  • Knowledge of aquaculture including: aquatic species husbandry, water quality, genetics, natural and artificial spawning.
  • Practical experience in raising fish in recirculating systems, tanks and ponds.
  • Knowledge of molecular genetics and biotechnology methods.
  • Practical experience in DNA/RNA extractions, PCR, gel electrophoresis, capillary electrophoresis, Microsatellite markers, GeneMapper software, Genotyping, flow cytometry, ploidy analysis, ultrasound imaging, Computer-Assisted Semen Analysis (CASA), hybridization.
  • Knowledge of experimental design.
  • Effective oral and writing skills.
  • Computer literacy.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in a team effort.
  • Initiative, resourcefulness, punctuality, and ability to work independently are essential.
  • Ability to organize a diverse workload.
  • Exhibit professional and personable demeanor.
  • Ability to perform miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
  • Must possess a valid driver’s license.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • M.S. in Aquaculture with Genetics emphasis, or related field.
  • 5 Years work experience in Aquaculture Genetics in both Research and Extension
