Description:

Senior Research Assistants are normally graduate students, or University of Winnipeg undergraduate students, employed to assist in the execution and evaluation of research projects in their area of study. The positions may oversee Research Assistants in areas such as the use of proper techniques, analysis, and documentation.
Senior Research Assistants work under the general supervision or direction of more senior researchers or faculty members, and are expected to exercise judgment in prioritizing, planning and organizing their own work within defined parameters.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Research Assistant to join our team for a research project focusing on the political life and ideas of Ernest Lapointe, a former Member of Parliament. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in gathering, analyzing, and synthesizing historical and political data related to Lapointe’s life, career, and the broader Canadian political landscape of his time. This position offers a valuable opportunity for undergraduate students at the University of Winnipeg to gain hands-on experience in historical and political research under the supervision of a senior researcher.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at the University of Winnipeg, preferably in Political Science.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in using library databases, online research tools, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Interest in Canadian history and politics is highly desirable.
  • Passive bilingualism in an asset but not requited.
  • Previous research experience is an asset but not required.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct comprehensive biographical research on Ernest Lapointe, including his early life, education, and career.
  • Investigate Lapointe’s political journey, including the districts he represented, partisan functions he held with the Liberal Party of Canada, and parliamentary roles.
  • Analyze the Canadian political landscape during Lapointe’s tenure as an MP, focusing on party systems, sociopolitical and economic issues, and major crises.
  • Compile an exhaustive bibliography of existing historiography and literature on Ernest Lapointe.
  • Summarize and present findings in written reports.
  • Assist in the organization and maintenance of research data and materials.
  • Participate in regular meetings with the supervising researcher to discuss progress and findings.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.
