About the role
This is a senior level position, initially for three years, to which we are looking to recruit a policy focused and experienced economist with knowledge and expertise in the field of international trade. The ideal candidate will have considerable experience of policy focused research and a commensurate track record of publications in peer-reviewed journals, a track record in funded research and engagement, as well as experience in managing junior researchers and research teams. The candidate must have demonstrable interest in the policy relevance of their work.
Subject to background and experience it is expected that the post holder will play an important role in contributing to the profile of the UK Trade Policy Observatory and the activities of the wider, interdisciplinary trade group at Sussex. Hence, this post provides the opportunity to spend the next three years focusing on research with relevance and impact, and to provide leadership and input into its ongoing development.
The UKTPO is a dynamic, interdisciplinary group and we are looking for somebody who will welcome extensive interaction with a team of trade experts and is keen on policy impact and external engagement. Given the range of current challenges facing the world trading system and the UK, this is an exciting time to join UKTPO’s team to undertake advanced research on international trade and trade policy. The UKTPO is at the forefront of national and multilateral trade policy analysis and commentary. As such, the position offers excellent conditions for research, for working as part of a stimulating team, and ample opportunities to build contacts with policy makers and other stakeholders.
About you
The UKTPO is focused on producing high quality academic research as well as extensive engagement with the policy making community and wider stakeholders. In addition, the Senior Research Fellow will be expected to undertake the role of Principal Investigator on research projects, demonstrating and providing academic leadership to more junior members of the team. While much of the UKTPO’s work focuses on trade topics for the UK, our work has a broader remit and includes areas of research and activities that go beyond the UK context.
While our research interests are broad, the work of the UKTPO focusses on three broad thematic areas:
- UK Trade currently includes a range of issues some of which are ‘post-Brexit, such as trade implications of the Northern Ireland Protocol, rules of origin and preference utilization rates, as well as more generic issues such as freeports, and free trade agreements, services trade, producers and distributors in trade, and partial equilibrium modelling.
- Trade, Sustainability and Development encompasses climate change and border carbon measures, environmental regulations, trade in critical raw materials, sustainable development and environment FTA chapters, sustainable development goals; agricultural value chains, food safety regulation, food systems, traceability, and trade relations with developing countries (under GSP or DCTS).
- Trade Policy beyond FTAs entails our work on mini-deals, services trade, digital economy agreements and digital FTA chapters, trade and economic security, options for regulatory co-operation, the WTO, supply chain resilience.
Candidates should demonstrate:
- The ability to conduct high quality and impactful academic research in the economics of international trade and integration.
- A strong interest in trade policy, and,
- Willingness to engage with policy makers, stakeholders, and the media;
- Experience in managing projects and teams of researchers;
- The ability to communicate clearly both in writing and verbally.
Collaboration and teamwork are central to the UKTPO, so being able to work closely with colleagues in a fast-moving and exciting area is vital.
About our School
The UK Trade Policy Observatory (UKTPO) was established in 2016 and is an independent expert group that has rapidly established itself as one of the leading research groups working on international trade issues in the UK. The UKTPO engages closely with policy makers and stakeholders on a wide range of trade policy issues. The UKTPO works closely with Chatham House who are a supporting partner of the UKTPO.
The UKTPO is also the lead organization in the recently established Centre for Inclusive Trade Policy (CITP). The CITP is a major ESRC funded research centre and is built on the precept that trade policy should be inclusive in both policy formulation and outcomes. As well as the UKTPO, the CITP brings together researchers from all four UK nations and regions – including from the University of Nottingham, the University of Strathclyde, Queen’s University Belfast, Cardiff University, and the University of Cambridge - and several overseas universities to create the UK’s first interdisciplinary research centre focused on international trade.
