ROLE OVERVIEW
Tyndall National Institute invites applications for the position of Senior Researcher - Bioelectronic Sensors Functionalisation Theme Leader within the Life Sciences Interface (LSI) Group. This research theme will be a core component of a collaborative bioelectronics technology platform. This is an exciting opportunity for a talented and experienced researcher to lead the development of novel scalable biofunctionalisation strategies for bioelectronic sensors and devices, compatible with cleanroom fabrication and/or additive manufacturing processes, and which meet industry standards for wearable, minimally invasive, and implantable devices. You will collaborate with multi-disciplinary teams to create innovative bioelectronic solutions, including diagnostic devices and sensor systems, aimed at advancing digital healthtech and healthcare, such as integrated microneedle diagnostic devices and multiparameter sensor systems for biomarker detection and monitoring in complex biofluids.
As the Bioelectronic Sensors Theme Leader, you will play a pivotal role in driving high-impact research activities, managing strategic industry collaborations, and producing cutting-edge results, which will lead to high impact research outputs including tier 1 publications and intellectual property.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the development of novel scalable biofunctionalisation solutions for bioelectronic sensor platforms, collaborating with internal and external research teams.
- Drive the design, implementation, and testing of biofunctionalisation strategies for bioelectronic sensors in real-world applications, including clinical evaluations.
- Spearhead the creation of synergies between novel materials research, sensor integration, and systems-level design, leveraging state-of-the-art technology platforms.
- Contribute to strategic research planning, proposal writing, and securing funding for bioelectronics biofunctionalisation-related projects.
- Manage a portfolio of collaborative projects with industry, academic, and clinical partners, ensuring successful project delivery.
- Ensure excellence in the delivery of all research outputs, including technical reports, high impact peer reviewed publications, filed intellectual property, prototype and demonstrators;
- Provide leadership within the Life Sciences Interface Group, guiding research direction.
- Ensure compliance with Tyndall’s Quality Management System, Health and Safety standards, and other regulations.
- Carry out any additional duties as may reasonably be required within the general scope and level of the post.
Essential Criteria
- Typically 6 years proven experience of developing biofunctionalisation methods and processes for bioelectronic sensors.
- PhD in a relevant scientific or engineering discipline.
- Proven experience in developing biofunctionalisation methods and processes for bioelectronic sensors.
- Evidence of strong leadership skills, with experience managing multi-disciplinary teams and large-scale research projects.
- Demonstrated ability to develop scalable biofunctionalisation processes for novel bioelectronic sensors.
- A successful track record in securing research funding from national, international, or industry sources.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable Criteria
- Evidence of entrepreneurial experience and creative skills/creativity
- Experience in preparing competitive research proposals for national, international, or industry funding programmes.
- Knowledge of biofunctionalisation processes for compliance with EU/FDA medical device regulations.
- Expertise in life sciences applications, particularly medtech or biopharma, including wearable and implantable digital health devices.
- Experience in managing R&D teams and defining strategic directions for technology teams.

Appointment may be made on the Admin Grade 6A Scale B (new entrants) salary scale €69,932 – €88,854 per annum. Salary placement on appointment will be in accordance with public sector pay policy.
