The Role:
As a As the Senior SACT Nurse, you are responsible for delivering chemotherapy nursing services to patients within the unit and to deputise for the line manager where required. This is your opportunity to make a meaningful impact and develop your career.
What You’ll Do:
- Provide specialist nursing advice and support to patients, their families and other healthcare professionals following diagnosis and through all stages of treatment
- Ensure continuity of a high standard of evidence-based nursing care for patients undergoing chemotherapy, assessing health, health related and nursing needs of patients, their families and other carers by identifying and initiating appropriate steps for effective care. This will include: -
- Managing a patient caseload
- Close liaison with medical consultants
- Ordering diagnostic tests within agreed parameters
- Running nurse-led clinics
- Work autonomously whilst providing clinical leadership, ensuring all patients have an accurate plan of care, which reflects the assessment undertaken and incorporates the issues and recommendations made ensuring clear documentation in the patient’s records
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge and skills in intravenous access, the management of central venous catheters, venepuncture, and chemotherapy delivery, including the management of anaphylaxis and extravasation
What You’ll Have:
Experience and skills:
- Experience in intravenous drug administration
- Experience in chemotherapy administration
- Sufficient post registration nursing experience in oncology or speciality to be confident and competent in using the required skills to do the job
- Ability to work accurately and reliably under pressure
- Ability to make decisions, organise and prioritise
- Experience and competence in blood transfusion and bone marrow biopsies
Qualifications and Knowledge:
- NMC Registered Nurse
- UKONS SACT Passport or to be completed within three months of appointment
- For this role you will need to be fully trained and qualified in venepuncture and cannulations and have experience of working with different types of central venous access devices
- You will be either working towards/or have the willingness to train towards having a recognised chemotherapy qualification
- UKONs trained and experience in oncology telephone triage. Recognition and management of neutropenic sepsis
