Boeing Phantom Works Space creates the next generation products and services for the Boeing Defense, Space & Security business and is currently looking for a Senior Satellite Communications Engineer to join the team in El Segundo, CA.
We’re seeking an innovative, self-reliant, and highly motivated Senior Communications and Networks Engineer for our Space Resiliency Organization that will work with our senior Network Architect to assist with the development of next-generation technologies for our variety of government customers. Our engineers focus on rapid prototyping to demonstrate a host of mission-enabling capabilities beginning with technology investment, concept development, proposal writing, requirements and leading to the design, build, integration, test, and demonstration of products in their relevant environments.
The communications engineer will support the initial design concepts for satellite networks both on the spacecraft and on the ground. Related duties include network architecture, network design, network technology, device selection, testing/verification, and network policies. The communications engineer will layout the framework resulting in specifications for the networks’ physical (hardware and software) components as wells as the protocols/formats used in organizing, operating, and managing computer networks.
This position is on site in El Segundo, CA. The ideal candidate will have opportunity to represent the Boeing Phantom Works organization at networking workshops, conferences, and standards forums.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS (REQUIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE):

  • Bachelor of Science degree from an accredited course of study in engineering, engineering technology (includes manufacturing engineering technology), chemistry, physics, mathematics, data science, or computer science.
  • 5+ years of experience with communications engineering
  • 2+ years of experience working on satellite or space based communication systems

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS (DESIRED SKILLS/EXPERIENCE):

  • Satellite Command and Control Standards such as UI-UX, UCI, AGA development
  • Provides technical approaches, products, and processes.
  • Design initial architectures for satellite communications either for ground operations or satellite communications payloads
  • Proposal and communications network designing and understanding of the Government System Acquisition Process

TYPICAL EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years’ related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years’ related work experience, Master+7 years’ related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop Satellite Vehicle command and control architectures.
  • High-level system design for Space to Ground interaction.
  • Satellite concept of operations, operational threads, and functional flow
  • Model Based Systems Engineering support for digital threads, digital twins, and requirements modeling.
  • Assist with evolution of software development process.
  • Modular Open System Approach and advocate for adoption
  • Develop System test methodologies.
