Johnson & Johnson is recruiting for a Senior Scientist at the Crystallization Technology Unit (CTU), located in Beerse, Belgium.
As a Senior Scientist, you will lead the development of crystallization processes that will be directly used in our chemical manufacturing plants. You will become part of a dynamic CTU team of crystallization experts that support the whole Johnson & Johnson portfolio of synthetic Active Pharmaceutical Ingredients (APIs). You will be interacting in expert teams from several partnering departments to select the optimal process and final API properties. We are looking for a motivated and dynamic crystallization expert to join our team!
Key responsibilities:
- Take responsibility for the development of the crystallization process and the downstream processing of the final API in multiple projects in the portfolio. Be involved from laboratory up to plant scale to tackle arising problems and guarantee on-time delivery of the final API.
- Independently conceptualize and conduct advanced experimental studies to gain mechanistic insights and develop a scalable crystallization process that meets API specifications (polymorph, particle properties, purity, etc.)
- Evaluate crystallization kinetics and thermodynamics to support and/or perform process modelling and design.
- Capture, analyze, and interpret data from various sources: inline analytical data (images, IR, Raman etc), offline analytical data (UPLC, XRD, DSC, Laser Diffraction, etc.)
- Evaluate downstream processing steps: isolation, drying, and milling.
- Work with a diverse group of collaborators including R&D chemists, Pharmaceutical Sciences, Drug Product Development, and API manufacturing plants.
- Stay updated on scientific and technical advancements in crystallization techniques through external collaborations and academia.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education
- Education or research experience in the field of crystallization or particle tuning sciences (preferably a Ph.D. in chemical engineering, chemistry, physics, or equivalent experience)
Experience and Skills
Required:
- Hands-on experience with conducting accurate data-rich lab experiments
- Experience in one of these fields: crystallization process design, working with PAT equipment, or process modelling (e.g., population balance, kinetic modelling)
- Effective verbal and written communication skills in English
- Ability to cooperate and thrive in a dynamic team environment!
- Strong scientific knowledge in crystallization fundamentals
Preferred:
- Experience with process scale-up and/or technology transfer, moving from laboratory to pilot plant or production scale.
- Familiarity with either:
o API solid state screening and selection,
o Design of Experiments methodology and high-throughput experimentation,
o Downstream processing steps: isolation, milling, and drying,
o Particle surface modification or powder characterization
