Role purpose and overview
Organic traffic is a crucial acquisition driver for The Telegraph website and a key focus for our ongoing growth efforts. Our goal is to leverage this traffic channel to fuel long-term growth, reach new demographics, and consistently attract new customers.
Our SEO team is dedicated to promoting best practices across the business, collaborating with each desk to ensure the creation of SEO-friendly content. The Evergreen SEO team specialises in long-life content, managing the organic performance of non-news articles. This includes topics within the Telegraph Life section, such as personal finance, health & fitness, film & TV, and culture.
We are seeking an enthusiastic self-starter who understands the vital role of search engines in content discovery to join our Evergreen SEO team. As a Senior SEO Executive, you will assist the Senior SEO Manager in executing the organic growth strategy for Telegraph Life. Your responsibilities will include advising desks on SEO best practices, identifying growth opportunities, and reporting on organic search performance.
The best example of our evergreen content can be found within Telegraph Money and its associated guides.
Key responsibilities

SEO and Content Management

  • Provide Clear Guidance: Offer actionable advice to commissioning editors in a friendly and approachable manner by utilising SEO best practices.
  • On-Page SEO: Suggest improvements for on-page on an article-by-article basis. Use content briefs as a primary method of getting this information across for writers of varying SEO-competency.
  • Keyword Research: Conduct keyword research using tools such as ahrefs/SEMRush to identify new content opportunities that drive traffic through organic search and are appropriate for The Telegraph’s target demographic.
  • Internal Linking and Clustering: Strategize & implement internal linking and clustering techniques to enhance SEO performance across various topic areas.
  • Technical SEO Understanding: Maintain a working knowledge of technical SEO to identify and resolve issues, and be able to take on board and implement advice from the Technical SEO team.
  • Editorial Guidelines and Demographics: Understand and respect editorial guidelines and key target demographics to guide content recommendations effectively.
  • Cross-departmental collaboration: Collaborate with teams across the Editorial and Product departments to further fuel SEO efforts.

Analysis & Reporting

  • SEO Performance Analysis: Conduct SEO performance analysis using our internal analysis tools and monitor ranking changes using tools such as Pi Datametrics.
  • Competitor Analysis: Perform competitor analysis, actively monitoring The Telegraph’s visibility metrics compared to competing sites.
  • Reporting: Deliver and report on these findings to desks comprehensively and clearly, providing feedback and actionable insights that they can implement with confidence.

  • SEO Expertise: Deep understanding of SEO best practices, particularly in on-page SEO and content strategy, with a working understanding of technical SEO, as evidenced by previous professional experience.
  • Communication and Relationship-Building: Exceptional communication skills with the ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Analytical and Reporting Abilities: Strong analytical skills to interpret data and derive insights, coupled with the capability to effectively report findings to stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in Google Sheets/Excel: High proficiency in using Google Sheets and Excel for data analysis and reporting.
  • Industry Awareness: Keen interest in the latest SEO industry trends, with a proactive approach to staying informed about new releases and developments.
  • Problem-Solving: Strong problem-solving skills to address challenges and implement effective solutions.
  • Time Management: Excellent time management and prioritization skills to handle multiple tasks efficiently.

  • Project Management: Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously using project management tools like Trello, Notion or Monday.com.
