Description:

PORTWEST, a leading global manufacturer of safety wear, workwear and PPE is currently seeking applications for the position of Senior Software Engineer in Westport, Co. Mayo. Portwest is one of the fastest growing workwear companies in the world currently employing over 5,300 staff worldwide, with customer service staff in over 130+ countries and 11 Global warehouses in UK, Ireland, Italy, Poland, Spain, UAE, USA and Australia. We design, manufacture and distribute market leading workwear, safety wear and PPE in fully owned production facilities.

JOB SUMMARY

As the Senior Software Engineer you will

  • Help lead the development and maintenance of our PHP-based eCommerce solutions.
  • Design, develop, and enhance applications using modern MVC frameworks, including CodeIgniter and Laravel.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver scalable, high-quality software solutions.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues in collaboration with the support team.
  • Contribute to architectural decisions, code reviews, and best practices to ensure a robust platform.
  • Write good, efficient code that’s been tested and well-documented.
  • Help to keep our code in shape by code review, making sure it follows the right style and practices and is built to scale.

REQUIREMENTS

  • Strong experience in PHP and proficiency with MVC frameworks, particularly CodeIgniter and Laravel.
  • In-depth knowledge of relational databases, such as MySQL, and the ability to optimise queries.
  • Solid understanding of web technologies, including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to debug complex issues.
  • Experience with version control systems (e.g., Git) and collaborative development workflows.
  • Familiarity with modern development tools and techniques, such as dependency management (e.g., Composer) and unit testing.
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Experience consuming, designing and implementing RESTful APIs.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools for deployment, monitoring, and CI/CD.
  • Understanding of cloud environments, particularly AWS or similar platforms.
  • Exposure to eCommerce platforms and integrations, such as payment gateways and shipping APIs.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop new features and enhancements for our eCommerce platform and internal software.
  • Maintain and improve existing systems, ensuring high performance and reliability.
  • Provide mentorship to junior developers and assist in code reviews to uphold coding standards.
  • Collaborate with product owners, designers, and QA to define and deliver solutions.
  • Optimise application performance and scalability.
  • Proactively identify technical risks and recommend solutions to improve the system.
  • Contribute to the team’s Agile process, including sprint planning and retrospectives.
