ABOUT THE BBC

The BBC is committed to redeploying employees seeking suitable alternative employment within the BBC for different reasons and they will be given priority consideration ahead of other applicants. Priority consideration means for those employees seeking redeployment their application will be considered alongside anyone else at risk of redundancy, prior to any individuals being considered who are not at risk.
We don’t focus simply on what we do – we also care how we do it. Our values and the way we behave are important to us. Please make sure you’ve read about our values and behaviours here.
Diversity matters at the BBC. We have a working environment where we value and respect every individual’s unique contribution, enabling all of our employees to thrive and achieve their full potential.
We want to attract the broadest range of talented people to be part of the BBC – whether that’s to contribute to our programming or our wide range of non-production roles. The more diverse our workforce, the better able we are to respond to and reflect our audiences in all their diversity.
We are committed to equality of opportunity and welcome applications from individuals, regardless of age, gender, ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, socio-economic background, religion and/or belief. We will consider flexible working requests for all roles, unless operational requirements prevent otherwise.

JOB PURPOSE

The Live Site team within Digital Distribution is responsible for the operational running, deployment of software, and ongoing server maintenance for the BBC’s media distribution servers and web traffic managers.
The estate consists of a large suite of Linux-based servers, running on virtual and physical machines across several remote data centres, with builds and configuration managed via tools such as Puppet and Cobbler.
We are looking for someone to provide admin-level support across these servers on a day-to-day and On Call basis, including managing deployments, carrying out system upgrades, and overseeing the health of these systems.
The role would be ideal for someone to broaden their experiences of supporting servers at scale, troubleshooting complex issues, and maintaining high-traffic production systems, while finding opportunities to introduce new concepts

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Managing deployments at scale across the media distribution and web traffic servers both On Prem and remote sites.
  • Second line support and On Call support for the BBC’s on premises media distribution servers and web traffic managers
  • Routine software patching, and emergency patching when required, including co-ordinating downtime of live servers.
  • Working with product teams to define server builds, define and store configuration, and use these to build out environments.
  • Proactively reviewing server operational performance, make improvement recommendations, and identify upcoming issues.
  • Participating in major OS version upgrades, including providing base builds, defining server builds, and troubleshooting.
  • Creating and securely distributing server certificates under the internal self-signed CA across the BBC’s internal estate.
  • The role is not directly responsible for infrastructure or networking but may occasionally help with wider troubleshooting.
