Pay band – Up to £69k (negotiable depending on experience)
Location – Stratford with hybrid working*
Contract Type – TfL Engineering, Permanent
- Hybrid working within this role enables a balance of 50 per cent of time split between the office and home over a 4-week period. Hybrid working arrangements can evolve subject to business requirements
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
- Ensures the safety, functionality or compliance of medium risk newly implemented or altered assets, engineering processes, procedures or systems.
- Leads the development and implementation of medium complexity engineering solutions within their stated discipline or functional specialism, through the provision of subject matter expertise or management of multi-disciplinary teams.
- Provides internal stakeholders with appropriate challenge and professional advice to ensure the development or delivery of high quality, tested engineering solutions.
- Represents TfL Engineering as a subject matter expert when engaging with suppliers, customers, industry bodies and external agencies, identifying and influencing best practice to enable continuous improvement across TfL.
- Makes authoritative technical recommendations which have a medium impact on organisational performance in both the short and longer term.
- Evaluates, selects and applies appropriate solutions to medium risk / value / complexity engineering problems that improve efficiency or effectiveness, while improving safety and reducing operating costs.
- Acts as Delegated Standards Technical Authority (where assigned), reviewing or maintaining technical or functional strategies, standards and governance for their stated discipline or function, taking into account cost, risk and quality requirements as specified by the business.
- Leads a culture of continuous improvement through the identification of best practice, innovation, whole life cost optimisation and effective root cause analysis.

- Good understanding of the interfaces between own discipline / functional specialism and the wider transport system

- Knowledge of applicable health & safety legislation, industry best practice, standards and guidance
- Knowledge of the TfL Vision, Mayoral Transport Strategy, Business priorities and financial constraints
- Good understanding of systems engineering management
- Good domain knowledge of the relevant transport and / or infrastructure system including system delivery, operation and maintenance

EXPERIENCE
- Significant experience in several of the following areas: conception, specification, design, construction, testing, commissioning, bringing into use, operation and or disposal of assets, systems or changes to engineering practice
- Broad experience of managing multi-disciplinary engineering teams or applying subject matter expertise to resolve complex technical challenges
- Broad experience of applying professional engineering judgement to support significant value programmes, projects or operational activities
- Broad experience of building relationships with and influencing a wide range of stakeholder at all levels within and outside of the organisation
- Broad experience of systems engineering and its practical application
- Working experience in a number of the systems engineering sub-disciplines, e.g. system architecting and modelling, interface management and requirements / configuration management

Responsibilities:
As a Senior Systems Engineer, you shall provide Systems Engineering professional expertise to the Systems Engineering function and lead/support project deliveries. This shall be achieved by establishing and systematically documenting the associated definition of customer/user needs and requirements early in the development cycle, followed by design synthesis, change and configuration control, systems integration, verification and validation to enable the successful and safe refurbishment, renewal, improvement and/or extension, etc., of TfL assets. A systematic approach shall be deployed in considering the complete problem and the required outcome, including cost and schedule, performance, training, test, manufacturing, operations and disposal.
A Senior Systems Engineer applies significant expertise in the field of systems engineering developing and implementing complex engineering solutions, systematically, safely and within cost limitations. You shall interpret / develop technical strategy; check or produce designs, associated drawings, information, calculations and research; and provide technical guidance and advice in your position as a trusted source of engineering expertise in systems engineering for everyone, including our Heads of Engineering Delivery.
You may operate without any direct reports or may manage a team of other similar discipline engineers, dependent on the specific nature of the role and the size of the project, to which you are assigned. As a Senior Systems Engineer, you shall provide technical expertise and advice at a strategic and tactical level to support the development of Systems Engineering activity throughout TfL.
To be considered for the role, you will ideally have experience of and be able to supervise others in a number of the following areas:
- Systems engineering design, integration, verification and validation, requirements management, configuration management and change management at a senior level
- Applying systems engineering to each stage of the project lifecycle.
- Defining, planning and delivery of engineering for innovative and complex systems, products and services.
- Developing innovative solutions to systems engineering challenges.
- Creating assurance submissions.
- Supporting the achievement of system acceptance and handover.
- Specifying and procuring complex systems.
- Working independently without supervision and able to quickly understand complex issues and tasks.
- Providing advice and guidance to team members.
- Working in a ‘matrix’ organisation.
- Working to tight deadlines in a high-pressure environment.
