ABOUT THE POSITION

We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Tax Associate with specialized expertise in personal, corporate and trust taxation as it related to ultra-high-net-worth individuals and their complex corporate structures. The ideal candidate will work closely and play a pivotal role in assisting the Tax Director in overseeing the US/Canadian and other foreign compliance needs for our tax department, working with external partners to ensure timely compliance with tax laws for our clients. The candidate will also assist the Tax Director with identifying and overseeing tax planning and advisory projects with external counsel and act as a key liaison with external partners (accounting firm, tax attorneys, etc.).
This position requires proficiency in personal and corporate income tax, as well as an understanding of trust and estate planning in Canada. An awareness of US/State personal/tax/estate planning is an asset. The successful candidate will have experience working with high-net worth clients and must be skilled at building rapport with clients.
You will report to the Tax Director and Managing Director of our Family Office and work closely with our CFO and accounting team to help build out the accounting side of our Tax and Accounting department.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field. CPA or relevant professional certification required.
  • Proven experience as a Tax Accountant with a focus on personal, corporate, and trust taxes in a Big 4/Mid-tier accounting firm. This role would be suited to a background in shareholder-manager personal/corporate tax.
  • Masters of Tax and/or CICA In depth Tax I, II, III; is an asset
  • Enrolled Agent designation is an asset
  • 4 to 5 years of direct tax compliance, tax planning, and international tax experience working directly with UHNW families and their complex corporate structures (multiple trusts, holding companies, etc.) at a minimum
  • Must have in-depth knowledge of Canadian/Quebec tax laws/regulations and an awareness of US/State personal/tax/estate planning
  • Interest or familiarity of tax accounting software (TaxNet Pro/Checkpoint/CCH)
  • Familiar with operations of international tax treaty networks and withholding tax.
  • Working knowledge of corporate tax regulations, trust and estate planning strategies, and related legal considerations.
  • Strong analytical skills, research skills and attention to detail, with the ability to interpret complex financial data.
  • Must be self-motivated and proactive with an interest in keeping up to date with developments in tax
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to convey complex tax concepts to clients and internal stakeholders.
  • Interest in working with AI to scope, build and implement systems for scalability.
  • Proficiency in accounting software, Microsoft Office Suite, Microsoft Excel and tax planning tools.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate with external partners to file complex Canadian and US personal, corporate, trust and foundation tax returns, ensuring compliance with current tax laws.
  • Collaborate with our internal teams (investment, financial planning, accounting) to understand and gather the proper documentation and information required to ensure proper tax planning and compliance for clients.
  • Conduct thorough research on various investment products and stay updated on changes in personal, corporate and trust tax regulations and planning strategies and assess their impact on our clients.
  • Assist the Tax Director in providing guidance on wealth transfer, asset protection, and tax-efficient estate structures.
  • Collaborate with clients to understand their unique financial situations, goals, and objectives.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, providing guidance on tax-related issues and strategies.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships through clear and concise strategies.
  • Provide support for client audits and reviews, preparing necessary documentation and collaborating with external partners and auditors.
  • Analyze financial data to identify tax planning opportunities and mitigate potential risks.
