WHAT WE NEED!

The Senior Technical Manager works closely with the Lead Technical Manager across Sports TV Operations, Sound and Resourcing to ensuring continuity and quality of output. The role is across the BBC Sport Gallery as well as related projects and Sports events.

WHAT EXPERIENCE WE’RE LOOKING FOR!

  • Experience and evidence of working in a live broadcast environment – preferably in a Live Sports environment.
  • Familiarity with using a range of diagnostic and monitoring tools
  • Excellent organisational and time management skills.
  • Experience working in a Technical Operations / Broadcast Engineering environment
  • Excellent IT skills and experience operating technical broadcast equipment is essential.
  • A good knowledge and commitment to providing high quality technical output.
  • Able to understand competing operational, editorial and production requirements.
  • Good interpersonal skills to establish harmonious working relationships with a variety of personalities, and able to communicate effectively with others and keep them informed on progress and to clarify production requirements.
  • Experience in logging and managing incidents in an operational environment, the typical live transmission challenges whilst ensuring operational good practice.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with external providers and internal partners, including senior stakeholders.
  • Able to demonstrate editorial awareness and an understanding of BBC Sport priorities and objectives.
  • Experience of advising options for productions, choices of provision and any aspects of technology around broadcast aspirations.
  • Experience with assessing the technical viability of content ideas, identifying and mitigating any risks, and alerting production to financial implications.
  • Knowledge of Studio lighting and using lighting desks.
  • A confident and inspiring team leader, able to help develop and motivate the staff around them
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety regulations across all TVC operational areas in order to promote a safe working environment.
  • Knowledge of BBC production computer systems.
  • A Broadcast/technology related qualification is desired, but not essential.
  • A strategic thinker able to meaningfully contribute towards a continuous improvement framework

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure that the studio and technical facilities to which the team is allocated are fully operational and that staff and facilities are used efficiently to meet service level expectations.
  • Ensure that, where appropriate, pro-active rather than reactive work is carried out, with the aim of preventing problems occurring.
  • Plan for major Sport events coverage, communicating new workflows to the Sport production teams.
  • Provide information and be a source of advice for producers and production managers around options for productions, choices of provision and any aspects of technology around their broadcast aspirations.
  • Work with Production leads to assess the technical viability of content ideas, identifying and mitigating any risks, and alerting production to financial implications.
  • Be a point of reference for management and BBC Sport for craft, technical and safety issues.
  • Ability to access a situation and make timely decisions appropriate to address the issue for the direct benefit of any activity concerned.
  • Recommend training, deliver training and play a key and influential role in staff career development to create a common sense of purpose, motivate the team and ensure that staff are deployed in a way that maximises their effectiveness.
  • Keep abreast of industry developments and new technology. Share knowledge and experiences with colleagues. Be proactive, seek out, recommend and adopt more effective techniques, ways of working and best practices to drive efficiencies and deliver value for money.
  • Work with the Picture Shop North Scheduling teams to ensure that staffing levels are sufficient to meet current and future needs, and that the skill base is continually developed to anticipate production trends.
  • Troubleshoot and diagnose defects in complex systems with an appreciation of real-world impact.
  • Create, maintain, and enhance supporting documentation such as Standard Operating Procedures for the operations team.
  • Deputise as required for senior staff.
