Responsibilities:
We are seeking an enthusiastic and proactive Senior Technical Specialist to join our dynamic technical operations team, which strives to provide a sector leading technical support for FSE and the wider University. With a commitment to customer service excellence and a passion for science and engineering, the Senior Technical Specialist will provide an agile technical support service to staff and students for research and teaching activities. FSE’s research and teaching quality is recognised globally; this is an exciting opportunity to join us in Manchester and contribute to the provision of a sector leading technical service.
Our newly built 400 m2 high voltage laboratory is the largest and best-equipped electrical infrastructure test and research facility in UK academia. Key flagship equipment includes a 2 MV impulse generator, an 800 kV AC generator and a 600 kV DC generator. The High Voltage (HV) and Electrical Systems Platform builds upon the innovative, creative, practical and research capabilities of our enterprising technical staff. The Senior Technical Specialist will be primarily responsible for directing and leading the platform, coordinating and interacting with research, teaching and industrial stakeholders throughout this process. As such, this role would suit an experienced and ambitious engineer with a strong background in electrical engineering and an in-depth knowledge of high voltage testing systems.
As the senior lead within the High Voltage and Electrical Systems Platform, the Senior Technical Specialist will
- Be required to lead and support the work of the High Voltage (HV) and Electrical Systems Platform within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. The primary focus of this role will be the provision of support of research and teaching within the High Voltage Laboratories.
- Be expected to play a key role in ensuring our experimental facilities run efficiently and develop in response to the needs of the research. They will be expected to have a close and supportive working relationship with the academic staff and their researchers who are delivering research projects.
- Direct and support facilities and themes including the Department of EEE’s High Voltage, Power Conversion, and Power Systems research groups.
- Will need to collaborate, cooperate and work effectively with other platforms utilising facilities and Platforms such as Mechanical Testing, Optical and Electronic, Advanced Manufacturing, Workshops and Surface via the PPMS booking system.
