Are you a passionate and experienced traffic engineer looking to make a real impact on how people move through our city? We’re seeking a dynamic Senior Traffic Signal Engineer to lead our team in designing, implementing, and optimizing traffic signal systems that prioritize safety, efficiency, and accessibility for all road users.
As the Senior Traffic Signal Engineer, you’ll play a crucial role in shaping the future of our city’s transportation network. Reporting to the General Supervisor, you will lead and mentor a team of project engineers and transportation technicians, overseeing all aspects of Active Transportation and Transit Priority Measures for traffic signal projects, from initial design and planning to construction and implementation. You’ll be a key point of contact for the public and council, providing expert advice and representing the City at meetings.

SKILLS REQUIRED FOR SUCCESS:

  • Strong leadership skills and experience leading a technical team
  • Strong experience in project management and contract management
  • Ability to read, understand and interpret engineering standards, drawings and specifications, legislation and policies and procedures
  • Demonstrated ability to exercise sound engineering judgment and make appropriate technical decisions to address complex engineering issues
  • Demonstrated knowledge to authenticate all applicable professional work products
  • Demonstrate ability to communicate effectively in written and verbal form

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil or Electrical Engineering or equivalent from a recognized University, preferably with coursework in transportation or traffic engineering
  • Must be a Professional Engineer (P.Eng) in good standing and registered with APEGA. Applicants in a different Canadian jurisdiction eligible for Inter-Provincial Mobility (IPMA) with APEGA may be considered. Registration with APEGA must be obtained prior to commencement of employment.
  • Minimum 7 years progressively responsible experience in municipal, traffic or transportation engineering
  • Demonstrated understanding and adherence to all APEGA regulations and standards, as well as all City of Edmonton internal standards, policies and regulations regarding the Practice of Engineerin

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, supervise and mentor a team of professional traffic signal engineers and engineering technologists and technicians
  • Develop business area and engineering processes, guidelines, design criteria, acceptance testing, and specifications for active traffic control devices, traffic management and communication systems)
  • Balance modal priority within the road network for the safe and efficient movement of transit, people, bicycles and vehicles
  • Oversee the effective management and timely delivery of annual capital programs and special projects, including the establishment of scope of work and procurement documentation for contractors or professional consulting services
  • Review both internal engineering designs and external stakeholders and consultants work
  • Direct, assign and manage work of contractors and consultants for traffic signal construction projects
  • Develop strategies, survey and collect data, and model traffic flows within the city to provide safe and financially accountable solutions to traffic congestion issues
  • Assess and identify impacts of projects on traffic flow and surrounding network roadways; review signal timings to accommodate and mitigate impacts
  • Address citizen and Councillor inquiries regarding traffic engineering and operation
  • Perform other related duties as required
