YOUR OPPORTUNITY
Our Transportation’s Transit & Rail Team provides comprehensive planning, design, and engineering services for all phases of transit projects. Our Alberta offices are seeking a Senior Transit Projects Engineer who will provide planning, design and project management services. While the focus of this role will be on transit projects, it will also involve coordination with the many other technical disciplines that contribute to the delivery of major transit projects.
We are looking for a highly motivated individual who can work in a team environment, has an in depth understanding of transit systems, planning and design principals, project management, and can lead complex pursuits, designs, and projects. This role provides the opportunity to work on exciting local, regional, national, and even international projects. Although based locally in Alberta, the candidate will be a part of Stantec’s greater North American Transit & Rail Sector.
This individual can also effectively train and mentor junior team members and step into a people leadership role with supervisory responsibilities.
YOUR CAPABILITIES AND CREDENTIALS:
- Strong background in transit (LRT and BRT) planning and design projects, including project development, project management, transit planning, transportation engineering, and/or rail systems engineering
- Self-motivated individual with the ability to work in a team environment or independently
- Leadership, sound business principles, excellent communication, and strong people skills
- Ability to lead, motivate, mentor, and develop transit project teams
- Works collaboratively in a team environment and engages in creative and critical thought
- Understanding and awareness of transit design standards
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills
- Experience with alternative delivery of LRT and BRT projects is considered an asset
- OE (Owner’s Engineer) experience is considered an asset
- Business development and marketing skills is considered an asset
- Proficient with the Microsoft Office suite of programs including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams, Project etc.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or related field
- Minimum 10 years of relevant experience
- Registered as a Professional Engineer in the Province of Alberta or ability to obtain within the next 6 months
Position will primarily work in an office setting but may require some field work.

Responsibilities:
- Manage transit projects through the conceptual, preliminary, detailed design and construction phases
- Manage multi-disciplinary teams and liaise with all disciplines to ensure all work is completed to a high standard and with a consistent approach
- Prepare project workplans, schedules and budgets, and work to meet them
- Interact with clients on a regular basis providing ongoing communication, project updates, and client support
- Lead the development of design plans, technical specifications and quantity/cost estimates
- Prepare engineering reports and technical memos
- Provide input and guidance to project designers and CAD leads
- Ensure applicable standards, quality assurance and quality control procedures are followed during the project
- Coordinate all project disciplines including rail and LRT systems, transportation structures, buildings, roads, utilities, and other specialty areas to ensure interdisciplinary design integration
- Provide technical direction and oversight to team members
- Facilitate goal setting, coaching, and performance reviews with each of your team members
- Promote our strong safety culture, ensure this is at the forefront of our business and lead by example
- Lead or assist with project pursuits, proposal preparation and other marketing and business development activities as needed
